Way to tell if a cisco ASA 5505 can be resold?

I recently took a training course from my employer, part of the "reward" for doing it was a free Cisco ASA 5505. Someone mentioned they might be nonresellable. Is there a way I can find out? Do I have to call cisco to do so?

The IOS usually can't be transferred when the equipment is sold. It's the responsibility of the buyer to get it re-certified and get a valid license/SMARTnet contract for the device.

With that being the case, I'll buy it!

Even if its brand new and never opened?

Yes, even if it's brand new and never opened. Buying used equipment for labs fine (if you have access to the required IOS images). To use used equipment in a production environment is usually more of a pain, is it typically will cost close to the same amount as new equipment after Cisco reams you for recertification, and you're dealing with potentially quicker failing equipment.

So were you being serious about wanting to buy it?

I bought the 10 user version from Newegg. You will probably want to upgrade that if you do any serious IT work at the house and have multiple printers, wireless, etc. I have maxed out the connections on mine more than once.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you can setup another router behind the ASA, and use it's NAT to mask numerous connections as 1 (of course this violates your license terms)
