Way to password protect a site in Firefox?

I'm wondering if there is a way to do it in Firefox. There are some sites I want to block OTHER people's access to, but not my access to.
IE does something similar by inputting a password, and I'm wondering if FireFox or some plugin allows this? The people I want to block off are not very computer savvy in the first place, and had I not stuck FireFox on the machine they would still be thinking that "Internet Explorer is the Internet".

Any ideas anyone? I've checked the tabs and cannot find anything

Do you mean that you only want to block the site from a particular browser installation? As in, they could go over to another machine and visit the site just fine?

I'm a bit confused also. Sounds like the OP wants to block access to sites on the local desktop level. There are probably some adult-content blocking programs that would do it, just customize the block list.

How about this:

I want to block acess to sites from a computer. I want to prevent my little sister from accessing Xanga and MYspace, etc all day long because it is a waste of time.

I have it blocked via IE since IE will let me selectively block sites

But I cannot block it via Firefox

So I want to block it via firefox


Is there a way I can force FF to block the site (but still allow me to access it occaisonally)

or must i use a third party program to do this? If i need a third party program, do you guys reccomend any good/free ones?

Change the hosts file to redirect the domains to loopback or some invalid IP.

Heh, at least she's interacting with other people. I spent age 12-16 completely glued to Ultima Online killing virtual people for gold and magic swords.

I don't regret it, though. It was the highlight of my life.

I'm in college and don't have a job at the moment, scholarships give me a surplus to spend as I deem fit.

I see nothing wrong with interacting with others....but not doing homework. I can't force her to do homework, but atlesat I can shut off other avenues of access.

Anyways editing hosts file would be a pain...because everytime I'd want to check on my Xanga or my other sibling wants to, I want us to have the ability to do so ...

just tried zone alarm, and atlesat in the freeversion there is nothing that allows you to selectively block sites :'(
any other suggesstions?

I have a netgear router.

I can go into the router and block sites and there is a block schedule also.

just point mypsace to 127.0.0.1 in the hosts file

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

open the file named 'hosts' with notepad and add the line:

#
127.0.0.1 myspace.com
127.0.0.1 xanga.com
#

Make sure NOT to save it as a text file. In notepad go to File> Save, or Save-as, and select filetype as 'all files'.

I am not sure if this applies to subdomaisn though.

She'll have a heck of a time figuring how you puleld it off though, since it is jsut normal windows netowrking

You could even run a local webserver that runs a page that says "you suck stop looking at xanga or wahtever"

and she would waste her time trying to cripple the webserver rather than addressing the real issue.
