It just seems on these boards that everyone tips for every little reason and even if you get bad service which it shouldn't be that way. Tips need to be earned.

what was the bill and how much were you expecting back?

First time was a sonic and I was suppose to get like 1.55 back. She gives me the dollar and tells me she has to go get the .55. After about 5 mins I call on the speaker and ask for my change. Sonic I normally get the entire change and then hand them a dollar.

They cant find the girl so I finally talk to the manager on the speaker who acts like its no big deal that his employ disappeared without giving a customer his change. I told them to keep the .55 and left.

Today I gave a $100 for an $83.xx bill...at a buffet. My party left to go outside and I waited at the table after the waiter walked by and said he would get my change when I motioned to him. He then proceeded to take another tables order.

Total wait time from him taking my money to returning w/change was probably 15-20 min. It really rubbed me wrong that he knew I was waiting to leave but then took another order.

I planned on tipping $10 but ended up leaving $6.

They have little hip-mounted coin dispensers everywhere I've been. Also, I find it odd that they don't have a way to put tip on credit, so I often can't tip there. Oh well... at least it's just fast food.

There's a good PvP comic about tipping at Sonic but I can't get to it from here. Can someone find it and link to it?

Yes. Problem solved before it exists, with almost no effort.

Agreed; I do that when I need to (ie: not enough small bills)

Sonic? the place where the waiter rolls up on skates? don't they normally have the change tube clipped to their belts?

thats the place, most of them dont have the change tube around here.

You

Tip

At

Sonic???

That's as bad as tipping for take-out.

I wouldn't tip at sonic, but I tip at take out places I frequent all the time. Why wouldn't I give an extra dollar to people I sort of know and have a good business that serves me well all the time?

And anyway, you're all paranoid... who gets mad at kids at ritas for having a tip jar out? Are you 94 years old?

But yeah, they should always bring back your change because who knows how you plan on tipping. I mean, it could be some ATOT poster that tips 8%!

My wife, 4-month old daughter and I went to this California Pizza Kitchen. The place wasn't terribly busy at 2 pm, so we were able to request a booth to nurse our baby.

The service was superb. I tipped between 25-30% on a $55 bill. The waiter was Johnny-on-the-spot and anticipated everything. I thanked him and told him that his service was excellent. I would expect that type of service at $100 per plate dining establishment.

McDonalds and Subway, Duncan Donuts, KFC, Taco Bell, etc... get no tip. I never got a tip when I worked in fast food during high school. Did something change?

Sonic sends girls to your car on skates. They balance to bring you your food and sometimes fall down. It's car-side service, which plainly makes them servers.

The PvPonline.com comic about it said that it was tipping for nostalgia or something, but there is still more service involved than run-of-the-mill McDonald's clones.

Out of all the Sonic's I've been to, only 1 has had a girl on skates. Most of the time they just walk out to you.

It shouldn't. It is saving you both time.

QFT...it's not presumptous to assume they'd be getting at least part of the change in tip.

They are looking to save time and provide better service.

In a higher end restaurant the staff can spend more time per table and would more than likely never ask that question.

That said, sadly many of you here seem to think the higher the price of the meal the less tip you should have to leave.

I dislike not getting change back, no matter the reason. The sole exception is if I tell them to keep the change or if I agree with not getting change before the money is taken away.

yeah don't tip at sonic. You start tipping there and then they will expect it... pretty soon they will be spitting in my diet cherry limeade because I don't tip them.

Sorry to tell ya, but tipping has been standard practice there for many customers and has been for years. Luckily, after they put card-swipes at each space with no way to tip, they have always been adamantly cheery saying "that's OK; don't worry about it" when I ask if there is any way to put a tip on the card (when I don't have cash, I always ask in case they have implemented it). They do not expect tips at Sonic but they do graciously accept them and it isn't odd at all.

I really hate take out places that put a tip line on the credit card receipt with a tipping percentage guide. Cashier usually gives me a wtf look as I scribble a line through this.

Would it be ok to tip less than the gratuity they listed based on service received?

yeap some places are starting to put a %20 tip on the bill. only one place has notifcation of it on the bill and its in really small text at the bottom of the menu (in the drink section).

last time my wife and I went out at one of the places the service just sucked. We had to ask 3 times for a refill of my wife's lemonaide (was about 15 minutes) and they screwed up my order (not the waitress fault) but she just took it back and never told the people they need to redo it (i bitched out the manager). After all that there was a damn 20% tip added to my bill.

i told the server to redo the recipt because there was no way in hell i was tipping 20%. she said she couldnt so i asked to talk to the manager. who at first said that was part of the bill. I started down the list of how bad the service was (loudly) and then asked if they really thought i should pay %20 for crappy service? i told him there was no chance in hell i was paying it and to call the cops. he went back and gave me a new bill without the tip heh.

and for those that care it is a "applebees" type place and the bill was $35
