So the girlfriend and I had plans to go to the river this weekend. She wanted to take nice pics, and I've wanted either a film SLR or a DSLR, but since I'm taking a photography class in the Spring, and film is cheaper now, I decided to play around with film. So I purchased a Nikon N75, cheapy lens, lens cleaner, and extended 2 year warranty from Nikon from the most reasonable place, BuyDig.com. Read their reseller ratings and they were good so I went for it. I was excited to get the camera for this weekend, so I had it overnighted to me. Got it yesterday, but I was too tired to mess with it after work so I went to sleep. Come home from work today, open it and the damn camera is sliding around in the box :|

The camera can move from here, to here freely in the box.

So I still take the camera out to inspect the damage, and the shutter is closed. Popped the lens on and you can't see anything through the view finder. Call Nikon, and they say that there is something definately wrong with the camera. Try to call BuyDig.com, but conviently they close at 2:30 central time on Friday. So I got screwed out of $30 dollars for overnight shipping on a defective product, and I get to use my craptacular digital camera this weekend. Thanks BuyDig!

UPDATE:

Well I called BuyDig on Sunday (been too busy to update), and at first they wanted me to ship them the camera so they could inspect it, and it they decided it was defective they would replace it. If not they would ship me back the defective unit and I would have to go through Nikon. They stated the process could take anywhere from 14 to 21 business days. I basically said F U, send me a replacement now and I'll ship the defective back, and they said no. So I told them I was just going to put a stop payment on it, and they could find a way to come pick it up from my house. From there they decided they would give me 100% refund, including the overnight shipping, and the return shipping for the camera, so I sent it off Monday. Now I'm just waiting for the refund to show up on my card.

Looks like it was packaged well enough. The box containing the camera has it surrounded by styrofoam, no? Is there some kind of tape holding the mirror up or down for shipping?

Go out and buy one from Best Buy or some similar place and return the defective camera on Monday to BuyDig.

I guess it's kind of hard to describe without pics, but the camera could slide from point a to point b freely in the box. The only thing holding the camera in place in the box is cardboard carton type thing.

I bought my Canon G2 from buydig and it served me just fine for 2 years. It continues to go strong in my father's hands.

So why did you buy it there?

You seem to be well-informed regarding their policies, so why are you complaining about them after the purchase?

Buyer beware.

you coudl always buy it from best buy, and then return the one from buydig to best buy,, not the most ethical or legal thing in the world, but it would work

I'm not gonna try to make this a personal attack, but you suggested I just buy one from Best Buy and return to BuyDig, but that was my reasoning not to. I have no problem waiting for a return for defective merchandise in any other situation (hey sh!t happens), but I'm just disapointed that I paid the extra $30 to have it overnighted in order to have the camera for this weekend and it turned out like this.

If you sweet talk them (don't yell, they'll just be dicks right back to you) enough, they might refund shipping charges.

Look. Stop bashing him ok.

I went to BizRate.com and it was one of the best Camera retailers out there. They were fast, they were cheap. It's just they could spend about 2 cents more and 5 seconds more on a little BETTER packaging.

My camera works, but so what? Packaging only costs like $2

Wow. It's weird how whenever someone posts threads like this about traders with bad shipping everyone gives them the thumbs up for the information. I try to do the same thing for a particular retailer, and I get flamed.

Take the other persons idea and modify it....buy it from bestbuy...return the busted one to bestbuy. Problem solved (no restocking fee). Bestbuy would screw you given the first chance. Fire back!

That is fraud. If the store doesn't catch you, your conscience will.

Best Buy won't screw you unless you give them a chance. I've never been screwed by Best Buy.

That, and no local retailer sells the body only. They are all the kit with the Nikon lense.

Looks to me like NIKON didn't package it so damn well. That box is big enough to include custom sized styrofoam to sandwich the camera in. I'd still like to know if the mirror was secured in some fashion.

It had a little piece of plastic with the writing "Do not touch, press, pick, or scratch the shutter curtain, blah blah blah" As far as anything securing the shutter curtain, nothing really.

EDIT: As far as the actual Nikon box, the camera is held okay in there. I mean as much as you pad an egg, if you drop it more than likely it's going to break.

Just blame it on the Democrats, Ornery and it'll all be okay. The Republicans would know how to package a camera, wouldn't they?

It was just going to be a cheapy practice lens to get accustomed to the SLR until I decided to purchse a nicer one. I didn't feel like paying the premium of the Nikon kit to get a medicore lens with it when this one already came with a medicore lense, was on average $50 dollars cheaper, and came with a Nikon certificate for an extra 2 years warranty.

Not the curtain, the mirror. If you put a good set of batteries in there, with no lens at all, you should be able to trigger the camera to lift the mirror, and open and close the curtain. Does anything appear in the LCD?

Sorry for the wrong terminology. I called Nikon, and they said that the mirror is always in a 45 degree angle position, and never moves. If your camera has the mirror closed it is either defective if new, or needs to be sent in for warranty work. As far as anything appearing on the LCD, it only has an LCD panel on the top which comes on. I don't know if you were just asking that question, or if you confused it with a DSLR.
