Hi, I hope you guys can help me. MySpace hasn't responded at all. :(

I'll try to keep this simple and vague - I have a co-worker who's son has unfortunately committed a horrible crime. On this son's myspace there are pictures of his family and family friends. Unfortunately, the family has already been the target of some harrassment because of the association in general, and they really wish not to have their picture on the web discovered and used against them or to identify them in any way that could be used as harrassment.

The son is still locked up and for whatever reason they have not been able to get the password for his account. I've emailed MySpace 3 times trying to alert them to the situation but I haven't received a single response. How would you guys proceed?

Thank you so much for your time,

CK

Even if this is real, I don't see any legal grounds under which you could force myspace to remove the guy's account.

pay someone in the lockup to extract the password from the guy who did the crime.

Why would it be fake? I'm just trying to find out if anyone has a history of having success with this sort of thing. My co-worker cannot be the first person in a situation similar to this and where better to find tech help than AT forums? I'm hoping that maybe a phone number or something might be around somewhere. They're such a huge entity, they must have a legal office or something. I can't seem to find that info on their horribly disorganized website, though.

Have a lawyer go thru the terms and conditions posted online, and accordingly write to myspace. Contacting myspace personally won't yeild any results.

Court order to have myspace remove the photo is your only option.

I don't use MySpace, but don't they have a way to report pictures that you find offensive? If so, simply report all the photos...

Thank you for your replies and help. I just spoke with my co-worker again and it sounds like their lawyer has said he can take care of it. Bah, what a pain in the butt. Stupid kid.

Thanks again,

CK

I'm not too sure, but a lot of times people don't host pictures on Myspace itself, but host them somewhere else and link to them. Could be that is the case here, in which case you can get ahold of whoever is hosting them and have them delete the files. I had a bunch of Myspace users (idiots) linking to a picture on my site, absolutely flooding my server with hits and leeching bandwidth, so I simply replaced the picture with something not-so-nice, and even though it didn't stop it did make me feel better.

tell us more about the kid and his issues. that actually sounds interesting.

yeah this would make for a better thread.

Well, the purpose of the thread is to draw LESS attention to the family's problem. So my apologies for being a tease. I just wanted to make it clear that this wasn't a juvenile prank photo or something.

I appreciate your understanding for their privacy. Thank you again for all of your help,

CK

I'm well aware of the history of AT posters creating fictitious people for their own personal amusement, lying about themselves, and being immature in general. However, I can't appreciate it being assumed that my situation is automatically BS. I can't allow myself to think that prejudicially about others. Be cautious on the net, absolutely, but why make accusations right off the bat?
