Is there a way to wire a monitor cable back on? Had a 17 flatscreen give to me because the vga cable had been cut it two. It's a shame to because its a nice looking CRT monitor and fairly new.

I'm interested to hear the answer to this.

Are the wires color coded?

Hi, I have spliced good cables to replace damaged Video cables. If you are handy with a soldering iron or have a buddy that is, it is possible, but a pain in the neck. Good Luck, Jim

yeah the wires are colored but there is wire on the outside of the rest of the wires. Guessing its a shield of some kind or ground? There is a grey, blue and red wire thats thicker than the others that has a wire inside a wire if that makes any sense. Does all the wires have to be wired together?

That didn't make any sense. a picture would help( a visual person). but yeah its a real pain to solder the wires back together. Then you will must likely have to shrink wrap each one and then its not gonna look too pretty...

I think soldering the wires together would definetly hurt signal quality, what I'd do is try and find an old VGA minitor and steal the cable from that one and then figure out how to use that cable on the panel.

I took the back panel off and the connector connects in 2 different places and is soldered in another. I think I will just trash it since it sounds like more trouble then its worth.

Owell got a free AMD Sempron 3000+ minus the power supply out of the deal. Someone I knows husband took her PC out and throw it down on concrete stomped a few times and then took his knife and cut the monitor cable. Luckily everything in the tower survived(even the HDD) though I haven't tested the DVD/CDRW combo. The whole thing was out of shape even the mobo was flexed out of shape.

Heres some pics for the heck of it:

Pic of the monitor cable(wires in the yellow is what puzzles me which has a wire in a wire):

Don't know how most(or all) of the stuff in the tower survived but I do know it was a Compaq and the HDD was a Samsung :D . If it had been me nothing would have survived but I ain't that angry. He probably only weighs 150lbs if that so he is quite weak.

Whoa, nasty.

Is he buying her a new computer now? (Or is this serious?)

You don't need to answer if you don't want to, but now I kind of want to hear the story behind this.

Not 100% sure on complete details as they ain't friends of mine. They are my bro inlaws family. Make a long story short I heard she was on it to much, husband has a temper and got tired of it and took it out and tried to destroy it. They got another which he could have bought but not sure.

Anyone have any ideas on the monitor before I use it for target practice?

If its a decent monitor why don't you call a local computer shop and find out how much it would cost to get the cable replaced. I had a cable replaced a few yers ago and I think it was around $50, but mine had a mic and speaker wire integrated into it so it should be less for a standard VGA cable (barring inflation).

Will small mom and pop shops do this? Either way I will wait till Monday(if they are open) or Tuesday before I shoot it up.

is the connector BNC or DB15?

i'd just solder it up and put on some heatshrink tubing. if your concerned about interfearnce put the whole cablw inside a ground strapand wedge the end in the backplane

Hi again, Solder joints will not affect signal strength or quality. Cut the shields back and jumper them across the new joint with a small wire. Jim

Edit: The three shielded leads are the three color signals. The shields need to be connected across the splice of the inner wire on each of the three. Connect the wire, insulate it and connect the shield with a piece of small wire. All wires to be color matched and insulated. Jim

Whats the shielding wire for? Does the first layer of wire need to be connected? I know you connect the smaller wires but what do you do with the thicker ones? Connect the inner and outer wires?

If I connect just the small wires the monitor gets a signal(light turns green) but I get nothing on the screen. Oh yeah and the monitor makes a constant noise.

Do you have the piece of the cable with the connector on it? Is it the standard analog VGA (15-pin high density) If so, then you will be able to fix as you have a template for which wire goes to which pin. Radio Schlock carries the 15-pin HD connectors and a metallized D-Sub 9-pin shell that will fit it. So just put the connector on the short stub of the cable and get a 3 or 6 foot VGA extension cable if needed.
. If it has the digital type connector or if there are mic and speaker cables integrated with the video signal cable, then get a cable assembly from the monitor mfr. and attach to the monitor's PCB. In either case it won't be too easy of a job. But then, how often does one have a $200. piece of gear land in his/her lap.?.

.bh.

p.s. Some of the wires inside a video cable may be individually shielded. So both the shield drain and the signal wire will have to be connected at both ends. It's sounding more and more like getting a new cable assembly from the mfr would be the hot ticket - may be worth a call to the mfr's service depot to see how much they would charge to repair it - but damaged or cut cables are quite typical of stolen items, so be prepared for some hassle unless you can get your hands on the original receipt or a written receipt from the original owner or some other proof of ownership. .bh.
