Way OT: B*****d Spammers

Had nearly 2000 of these in the last 24 hours 🙁

I don't get any spam, but my parents used their email address when registering at this college scholarship search website (fastweb for those in the know), and now they get a s***load of spam every day. Fortunately, the SBC Yahoo spam filter catches most of it - as well as most of the "forward this to ten friends and back to the person who sent it to you and the duck will come down and give you $100" type of crap. 😀

Don't know how they got my email address, might have been me, drunk 😱 , might have been the wife or one of the kids, not sure, maybe they got lucky! I would like to castrate them with the biggest, bluntest knife I could find though!

Just make sure it's slow. They need to suffer. Our director signed up for this one site she thought would help us (we are a small non-profit org), and since then, we've gotten a ton of spam. I had to install a server-based spam filter (GFI Essentials) just to handle it all. Over 2000 emails a week, 96% of it spam. :|

And to bring this on-topic, I had to load it on one of the servers running SETI Classic, and it's slowed the WU processing times a bit. 🙁

Strangely, hanging, drawing and quartering sounds good to me, I saw a re-enactment of what they did on the Discovery Channel (Rory McGraths Bloody Britain) a few months ago, and it looks GOOD!

With the sudden influx of spam, I'd have to say the your email addy was harvested from someone else's computer or a web site that you are registered with got hacked.

Seems to be endless ways that these companies can come up with addresses.

If you haven't already, you might want to explore this site. It may provide a bit more insite.

According to K9 i average about 25 emails a day, about 85% of which are spam & that's after my ISP does their filtering.

I wish i had been i bit more careful with my email addy when i first got on the 'net but i also bet with the way friends & family act i'd still be getting a bunch of spam.

Strangely, hanging, drawing and quartering sounds good to me...

I also think something slower, more drawn out, would be better. Something that lasts for months :evil: 😀

Dude, unplug your box from the internet & run some serious scans with good AV & anti spyware software. (you probably already did this, right?)

If you have a router block port 25 & see if the incoming bounce messages stop after a few days (just an idea, you wont be able to send any email this way).

Get some kind of program that will monitor the network activity out of your box. Shoot, run NetStat if you are on Windows & see if there are any port 25 connections.

What are the processes that are running?

ooh, I just thought of an aweful virus someone could write...
look for a distributed computing application then hijack the email address registered in the app and do bad things... ugly, very ugly :|

Yep - that's what it sounds like. Simple solution - change your Email address and only give it out to your close friends and family members. I've had a Yahoo account for around 10 years now and I use it for all of my daily Emails that could cause spam. Yahoo's spam filter actually works pretty good. I don't get much in my Inbox despite getting 150 - 200 spam messages per day going directly to Bulk.

yes, you have to have one address you use for forms, sign up deals on web sites etc and another email address for "Real Life". And make your "Real Life" address something not easily guessed by programs.
Firstname.Lastname@domain.xyz works pretty good.

Email addresses ending with .CD are very unpopular with spammers ... after all, who in the world would expect a lot of affluent folks in the Republic of the Congo ...

The Russians are 50% of the problem.....much of the spam comes from there. Korea, South America is now getting into the act (Argentina mostly) And Ofcourse the good old US OF A. accounts for about 95% of all the spam. Only one way to fight it. Write your congressman and express your strong desire to castraite the lot, along with the polliticians that are cosying up to the supposed "Legal Advertisement Companies" ! Send them in waves and in duplicate that we don't like or want no stinkin' spam! :disgust::|
