Wave Editor needed

I need a wave editor to record some music from linear input and convert it to mp3
What's a decent tool to do the job? Not a lot of features needed: basic 'cut and paste' for wav sections. I don't even need internal mp3 converter - I can do it through LAME.

Any advice?

They were bought by Adobe, and now they want to charge you $300 (!!!!!) for their software.
