I used to sleep through trains in an apartment I had a while back... That doesn't mean it wasn't loud, just that I was tried or that I drank too much that night.

My god how on earth can you people live with that kind of noise. Maybe i've been spoiled with my ultra-quiet laptop and desktop rigs, but I swear that amount of noise is simply unacceptable. ATI seriously needs to listen to its customers, WE DONT LIKE LEAF BLOWERS ATTACHED TO OUR CARDS. And they wonder why Nvidia is so popular.....

bah, this is horse poo-poo. The fan never gets to 100% in a any kinda normal situation and honestly who cares if you can hear the fan a little bit. I should complain to kawasaki that my ninja gets really loud at 15k rpm, they should no better than to have the engine spin that fast. I admit the fan on my x1900XT is louder than my old 7800 gtx but it sure has better IQ. I guess it depends on what is more important to you, minor noise issues or minor shimmering issues, take your pick.

Wow I'm glad I don't put my ear 6" away from my video card when I play games I guess.... :confused:

It simply doesn't pick up noise as well as the human ear does, and if I placed it where I normally sit, it would not be representative of how it actually sounds.

As for the 'speakers are aimed right at you', that doesn't affect anything either. I included what my system sounds like at 25% (near silent) and showed how much noise was added as the fan ramps up in speed.

Since you seem to have missed it.

Agreed. He should put the recorder roughly where his head is located when playing games.

Dang, and I am annoyed at the slight hum emanating from the cooler on my 7900GT. That would drive me insane :Q

i dont think it matters where u are.....the high pitched whine will surely reach you. like some one using a hair dryer, you can still hear the whine at a good distance even if you cant hear the lower frequencies

im sorry its just not the best desgin and ATI need to work on it

Meh, i have that card, & sure, it's loud when @ high RPMs.

But 95% of the time, i don't even hear it, since it's running so slowly.

During games, it certainly speeds up & gets louder, but during games, i'm obviously hearing the game, not the fan...

I agree that my X1800XT "can" be loudest card I've owned. The recording is a completely exaggerated and obviously dependant on the volume setting of your player...hardly a realistic example of how the card sounds in an actual PC environment.

I run mine at a static 60% because the stock dynamic fan speed settings don't work well for cooling in my PC. It's not so loud that I'm going to replace the stock cooler in my gaming rig at that speed. My gaming rig is in a busy part of the house, so silence isn't needed. I'm adding another for Crossfire..we'll see then :)

On the other hand, the fan on my X1800XL is far too loud for my HTPC in the quiet bedroom environment..its getting replaced when I find a suitable solution.

:fud;

I'm not gonna sit here and tell people the X1xx coolers are silent (they're not) but this is NOT representative of what one hears during use. This is like the Dean Scream of Vid-Card-Land.

(And I got no dog in this fight - I'm on water now :p)

I had the chance to try the X1900XT and the 7900GTX. Despite liking ATI cards, I picked the Nvidia because:

1) Performance is similar - no deal breaker;
2) X1900XT makes a high pitch noise during games. Very distracting/irritating;
3) 7900GTX cannot be heard - system noise (chipset, cases fans) are louder;

The X1900XT is very similar to the X1800XT. Same cooling solution.

If ATI would just use a fan a bit bigger and less RPMs, it would not be so loud. They could have used Artic Silencers - much better solution than the Accelero. The new coolers directs the hot stream to the mobo, what a crap solution!!

LMAO!! Aggressor, can you do a recording while playing a game? That's where it counts the most. Personally I don't think it's a big deal for those that run air cooling systems while gaming anyway since game noises drown out computer fan noise and if you wear headphones then it's rare to even hear the fans unless you got one of those tornado fans in your system.

Hmmm.

So the AF of 7800s is like a "needle in your eye" but that dustbuster racket isn't a "big deal".

Makes sense to me.

non of its a big deal

AF optomizations? TURN THAT ****** OFF (and download XG drivers)

fan noise? you could afford a X1900XT whats a few bucks more for a zalman cooler? just do it.

i have one in a water cooled pc. the xt never exceeds the 25% threshold so i never hear it (and it sits on my desk 18" from my ear).

i was worried noise would be an issue, but it hasn't been a problem at all.

ATI is going brute strength at the moment on graphics cards. They run hot, loud and soak up so much power they make prescots look like mobile processors. When nvida didn't have anything that could get close we forgave them, because you do have to make compromises for performance, but now Nvida does these flaws become so much more noticable.

The cooler is loud no doubt, at least when it's at 50% or faster speed. Luckily for me, I have good case with very good airflow and the cooler never reaches those speeds. It will at times get to where I can just hear it above my other fans, but I never get that annoying hairdryer noise... :) The best thing about it is it blows all that hot air out, instead of directing it at my CPU cooler.

Sadly, most people dont understand this. Good air flow, keeps things cooler. And keeps fans that are temp regulated, running slower and quieter.

But all the reviews we've been reading say the fan cycles in and out of of the 50%> speed while gaming, and a lot of user reports do to?

It's hard to know if your room temperature or case airflow will kick it into dirt chasing mode???
