Watt and Watts

I'm looking to get new speakers and then I came across something. I saw these little speakers at walmart; 800 WATT iconcept speakers. Linky They look too small to produce that much power.

Now if you look at these logitech speakers, which are more better linky, they produce 80 WATTS total power.

I was just wondering what the difference was between watt and watts and if there's some conversion somwhere we are to know as customers, or are ppl going to be fooled into buying the 800watt thinking it produces more power?

one thing I've learned about buying audio equipment is to ignore the specs. they are always misleading. in addition to inaccuracies they also have different ways of measuring those numbers. just ignore them and read up reviews and ask for opinions.

Nope, the difference is in the way they get the numbers.
Go to wikipedia, and find out about PMPO vs RMS.

* Teac PM-100 3D surround-sound speakers: 16 W RMS, 180 W PMPO
* Kinyo "200 W" PC speakers: 3 W RMS, 200 W PMPO
* Philips Fun Power Plus MMS-102 PC speakers: 10 W RMS, 120 W PMPO (The Philips data sheet mentions only the "RMS" value; the PMPO value is claimed by retailers.)

RMS is the average of the wave transform, AKA the one you care about 95% of the time.

It's like saying "2 weeks" or "a 2 week period", kind of. If you're counting, you'd use watts, if you're describing, use watt. The usage should be somewhat different, but they're essentially interchangeable. There's nothing about them that you should think indicates they're different units of measurement, or different orders of magnitude.

They sure as hell aren't 800W total even if the subwoofer is way more powerful than it looks.

the speakers do not produce power, they consume it. 800 Watt tiny speakers would lead me to think either bullsh1t, or horribly inefficient.

Power consumption doesnt really tell you much about the speaker except, perhaps, its impact on your electric bill.

Same goes for amps.....you can't buy an 800watt RMS amp for $100, you can however buy one that will produce 800w at 20kHz for a split second

To add to the confusion of power and volume, even if you get a reliable and accurate wattage rating for two speaker sets, the sensitivity of the speakers is going to play an equally important role in how loud something will get.

I remember my first "800 watt system"

Not quite as loud as my soon to be ~2000 watt system

Not quite as loud as my soon to be ~2000 watt system

Better than that other system... A total 5.1 system weighing only 7 lbs. and putting out 1800 watts? riiiiiiight...
