Pretty simple really:
Liddy and his buddies break into the Dems Watergate office and get caught.
Nixon is briefed at some point on everything that took place and rather than just allow the investigation to take place in the open begins to engineer a coverup.
Coverup is exposed showing Nixon lied about what he knew and when he knew it
In the process lots of other dirty laundry is exposed.

The big unanswered question has always been did Nixon know of and approve of the initial break in before it took place.
this

though it should be pointed out that interfering with a federal investigation is a felony and that was the key charge that which resulted in Nixons resignation.

They tried to cover it up by breaking into Watergate hotel/office complex.
They tried to cover up the break-in.
Nixon and his buddies lied.
Truth finally came out, because of tapes Nixon had to hand over which were his idea to install in the oval office, Nixon felt heat, resigned before possible impeachment.

This is how I understand it.

I would love a wikipedia-like website that broke things down like this.

Bulletpoints. Pro/con tables. Just bite-size, consumable chunks of facts.

Incorrect, JFK started the whole taping in the White House/Oval Office.

The answer was likely no.

The Watergate breakin had nothing to do with Nixion originally. The one who ordered it was trying to recover stuff that was compromising to him(he was hoping to cover his ass). Nixons cover could have exposed him to charges resulting from the cover up and charges resulting from things that also became exposed.

Yeap... sorta like Clinton.

If he had settled the Paul Jones law suit no one would have known about Monica most likely.

The cover up always gets them.

Personally I didn't think he did either, it made no sense given that they had to know McGovern had no chance of winning. Are you referring to the book Silent Coup which laid out the theory that John Dean was actually the one behind the break in?

That's the thing. The biggest misconception is that Nixon authorized the raid. He hadn't, but some guy close next to him had, Nixon, feeling loyal to his friends in high places, tried to cover for them, was found out, and was prosecuted for deceiving the public. The Republicans were in minority, much like the Democrats were 20 years later, yet they refused to stall the prosecution, ousting Nixon from their political circles.

It's a shame the Democratic party lost such integrity.
ALL HAIL THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!

So much fail/grom.

At the time the "plumbers" were started and the idea of a covert team to steal info on the Democratic party it was not certain that Nixon would have been re-elected.
And as to whether Nixon knew in advance, their is some fairly strong evidence he both knew of and endorsed the stealing of intelligence during the election. Nixon was scarred by what he thought was the stealing of the 1960 election and was determined not to let it happen again.

meh.. i still say nixon was a better president than all that have come since.

Nixon is really the one who implemented Johnson's Great Society programs and presided over a huge expansion of the federal government. I will never forget going into stores and seeing those ridiculous Wage and Price controls Phase 1/Phase 2 signs. As far as I'm concerned the only place Nixon could be considered a good president was in foreign policy.

Well we are constantly inundated with your news and whatnot. 🙂

I wonder why. They only clean the tank once a year, so that leaves 364 newsdays to fill up.

The Tank has to be cleaned?

Too bad it lacks historical accuracy much past the fact that the interviews did take place.
