This is one thing that everybody seems to know but I cannot ever understand.

I read the Wiki on it, but am still confused. Can anyone sum it up for me, if you don't mind?

Nixon and buddies in administration did bad things.
They tried to cover it up by breaking into Watergate hotel/office complex.
They tried to cover up the break-in.
Nixon and his buddies lied.
Truth finally came out, Nixon felt heat, resigned before possible impeachment.

This is how I understand it.

Nixon's staff did a lot of no-no stuff on the campaign trail during his administration. They were caught. Nixon and other staff tried to cover it up. They were caught. Resignation

Nixon had sexual relations with an intern.
He tried to cover it up.
He went on TV and said nationally he did not have sexual relations.
He lied and was taken to trial.
He got away with it.

Hmm wait maybe that wasn't Nixon......😉

Seems pretty straightforward to me. You should watch Frost/Nixon, that is a great movie.

I wonder why. They only clean the tank once a year, so that leaves 364 newsdays to fill up.

Isn't the irony in Watergate that he would have ran away with the election regardless?

That's the thing. The biggest misconception is that Nixon authorized the raid. He hadn't, but some guy close next to him had, Nixon, feeling loyal to his friends in high places, tried to cover for them, was found out, and was prosecuted for deceiving the public. The Republicans were in minority, much like the Democrats were 20 years later, yet they refused to stall the prosecution, ousting Nixon from their political circles.

It's a shame the Democratic party lost such integrity.

I would love a wikipedia-like website that broke things down like this.

Bulletpoints. Pro/con tables. Just bite-size, consumable chunks of facts.

One of the fun facts about the watergate thing is that the bunch o'guys that planned stuff like the watergate break-in was the organization called CREEP. Committee To RE-Elect the President.

At least the curtains.

Pretty simple really:
Liddy and his buddies break into the Dems Watergate office and get caught.
Nixon is briefed at some point on everything that took place and rather than just allow the investigation to take place in the open begins to engineer a coverup.
Coverup is exposed showing Nixon lied about what he knew and when he knew it
In the process lots of other dirty laundry is exposed.

The big unanswered question has always been did Nixon know of and approve of the initial break in before it took place.
