I thought I'd supplement this thread with a quick sample of projects in the Overclockers.com archives.

It appears from article #1255 -- dated within the last month -- that "bong" coolers are very much alive in the minds of Rube Goldberg DIY'ers.

lol what that guide doesnt tell you tho on that mini fridge one. You'll burn your compressor out in a matter of months.

And im sure CDC became very aware of this :D

Anyhow, the reason why you got better temps with it open was because of the same theory a bong is based on. The water evaps to release the heat energy. So hence you got better cooling at the price of water.

I hear you can replace up to a gallon / week on a bong. That could cost a lot of money in distilled. You might want to invest invest in a RO unit, and RO + small conc of antifreeze solution. Unless you can get distilled for dirt cheap. :p

Well, I can get generic Albertsons brand distilled H2O for about $1.50/Gal...less than a gallon of GAS! :) But you mention Reverse Osmosis, so what about water out of one of the drinking water machines? That's only 20 cents a gallon? Filtered, but I don't think it's distilled.

problem is once u jump to drinking, your going to lose the non conductive properties.

For now, i would see how badly evap is.

Then if you realize its pretty bad, then sub for drinking water

I just priced the distilled at Albertsons and their generic is only 69 (whoo hoo!!!) cents, so it's definitely affordable. I was also thinking of doing this.

Instead of a showerhead...let the water coming out of the computer run down some sort of material. Therefor eliminate noise altogether, and maybe the material will get cold as well...thus adding to the cooling effect. I'll advise when I try it :D

ROFLROFL.... CDC i hate to just your inspiration, but.....

Im sure its been tried. And im sure the ping pong method will give you the best temps.

How do i know?

Only a Bong will cool a TEC CPU + TEC GPU X 2.

That kind of setup brings even a thermochill pa120.3 to its knees

Notes to self...

1. Measure TWICE...Cut ONCE!
2. THOROUGHLY RINSE after using Dawn dish soap...this will be very important!
3. Super glue DOES bond skin instantly (Dumbass...it's written on the tube for a REASON)
4. Cutting PVC with a powersaw does not work that well because the heat generated will basically cauterize the cut you just mad with the melting plastic.

Let's see...anything else?

Okay then. Here goes. First off it's DONE! Yay. But, tomorrow, I will need to drain system because there are bubbles running through entire system because I forgot to rinse the pipe completely after washing it.

I cut about three inches off the pipe (NOT even bothering to measure at all) to put as the base. After going into the "flange thingy", I was left with less than 1 inch sticking out. Turned out okay though, because I had enough room to work with once it was under my table. From top to bottom, it is 22" exactly (give or take a few millimeters :))

Next, I super glued the fan to the "flange thingy mcdealio" and wound up gluing my fingers together. :( I bought a $1.99 "shower head", like the ones you put on a kitchen faucet, and zip tied it to the L connector joint thing. I drilled 3 3/4 inch holes in the base, and stuck the inlet to the pump through one of them. When the water clears up I will post a pic if needed.

No ping pong balls yet, and I will have to because my wife is complaining that the sound makes her have to go pee!! :) :)

So far so bad, and it gets worse. Dumped the distilled water in and started pump, IMMEDIATELY noticing the bubbles forming. Yep, forgot to thoroughly RINSE the pipe after washing it. I will have to fix that in the morning, after I buy some more distilled water.

However...My temps UNDER LOAD are 17C. Yep, I said 17C UNDER LOAD!!!

Screen...with Call of Duty and Nero running. CPU at 100%!

How I turn on my pump. For NOW, I have to turn pump on before PC, as I don't really feel like messing with a relay.

Okay, you have my permission to use the pic...it's the VERY least I can do. :) Neither me nor my wife can wait till I put the ping pong balls in, although it DOES have a soothing effect. My step-daughter asked when I was adding the fish. lol

As far as a bigger tank, I couldn't agree more. I just have to find something suitable that doesn't look too terribly tacky.

The only two thing that really has me "worried" is that where it comes out of the computer the hose didn't quite go on as far as I would have liked. I have put a towel under it so I can tell if it leaks, and nothing so far. Red circled area in picture below. Also, forgot a clamp on the other half of the L.

http://star.walagata.com/w/gonzo69/IM000687a.jpg

Thanks for the help. Greatly appreciated. It was a fun and very CHEAP project.

Hose = 3 feet @ 29 cents a foot from Ace Hardware
Plastic container = $3.00 at Albertsons
Pump = $5.00 on an eBay win :)
"shower head" = $1.99 at Ace Hardware
2' PVC = $5.00 something from Home Depot
The most costly part was the piece the fan is mounted in, and it was like $10.00 at Home Depot
So ROUGHLY $26.00, but adding things like hose clamps, I'll round up to $30.00.

One LAST thing...I promise! Any suggestions for the container? I don't want to use a round bucket, prefer something rectangular. I also would prefer something black to match everything else.

PEople use those big igloo containers. U know the one used in football games that are circular. They take the bottom faucit stopper out, and run a tube straight though, or sealed barb from the bottom. This way you dont have a messy tube leading up. :p That might be your final DYI for this setup.

Seriously tho CDC, it looks good, and your temps would even make my watersetup get jealous. I wish you seriously the most fun with it. Im sure you had when building it, and realizing you did something right.

Much better then your old setup eh?? also cheaper :p

CDC Mail Guy,,,,aigomorla,,,

The fault is YOURS!!!!!

I assign, affix, attach the responsibility at your feet.....

I blame you both!!!!

Here I've almost completed my setup,
very good temps, looks nice, quiet, almost perfect amd you guys show me something that can work better, is cheaper and probably more fun to tinker with..........

I'm sending the wife to your homes, I'm not taking the fall for this neverendinghobby/moneypit.......

It's all your fault,,,,,,

CDC, tell your daughter the fish are out, they clog the tubes. Newts on the other hand can squirm right through :D
nice job btw

Wow guys...thank you for the compliments, that's good to hear. Of course, aigomorla, I got a lot of help here from you. WoodButcher... is your wife cute??? :) :) :) JK....(well not really!) Don't newts turn into frogs though :)

I added the ping pong balls today, now it sounds like a waterfall hitting ping pong balls...Have to fix the noise issue because it is not as quiet as I'd like, although it IS somewhat quieter. Before I am asked...I put 11 in!

Thanks again to all. It was a fun and cheap project, and cools like nobody's business!
