That's fairly clever in its simplicity. And, since it and the rate of trash buildup are both tied to the current, it should always operate only as quickly as needed.

Seems amazingly complex for no reason. A post in the waterway with a floating line across the top of the waterway would do the same thing (skim the top of the water). Angled off to the side, the current should drag all the objects right into a collection area.

But then you have to get all that floating trash out of the water and into some container. This machine does that and uses no power. I would have said: "elegant in its simplicity", not "amazingly complex."

Would it seem simpler if the wheel drove a generator that drove the conveyor? That would be less efficient and more expensive than what they are using now.
