water pipe leaking!

Hi, a water pipe in my house sprung a leak. The main switch seems to have rusted shut, so we cant turn the water off. We're getting it looked at tomorrow, but for now I need some way to stop the leak. We wrapped some duct tape around it for now, and that slowed the water down, but it's still trickling out and it's gonna kill our floor. Any suggestions on a temporary solution? to stuff in there? Bubble gum?

It's very hard to patch a leak that is.. leaking.

More duct tape and a bucket is probably your only choice.

When the coupling broke on our water main in our first house we had to call the local water authority to come shut it off at the meter. They were nice enough to show me how I could turn it back on once I got the problem fixed. The reason we had to do it that way is because the coupling was before the main shutoff valve.

damn, a bucket is not an option, the pipe goes straight down into the floor so we cant put anything under to catch water. the water just runs straight into the floor 🙁

Cut a hole in the bucket and slip it under. 😀

Uhm, I would shut off the water main. Probably ought to get a clean bucket, pot, or something similar filled with water first, so you'll have some if you need it. Otherwise, cut the water off--wouldn't want that pipe to get any worse.

Cut a small section of split rubber hose and slip the hose section around the pipe with the leak in the center. Place a C clamp or a small wrench against the hose directly over the hole and tighten it until the leak stops.

Cut a strip of inner tube or rubber sheeting about a foot long and an inch or two wide. Start wrapping the strip around the pipe about 6 inches from the leak, stretching it tightly as you go and overlapping half of each previous turn. After you are finished, tie a cord around that end and go backward, wrapping the cord around the rubber strip in half inch laps. When you reach the other end of the rubber strip, tie the cord securely.
