CHICO, California (AP) -- A California State University student died of "water intoxication" during hazing in the basement of a fraternity, authorities said Thursday.

Matthew Carrington, 21, died early Wednesday while drinking water from a five-gallon jug and doing exercises at the Chi Tau house near the Chico campus, said Chico Police Sgt. Dave Barrow.

An autopsy showed death was triggered by hyponatremia, a condition in which excess water in the body causes sodium levels in the blood to drop. Water is then absorbed into the blood and fluid builds up in the brain.

The case was still under investigation, and no decision had been made on whether to file charges.

Carrington's is the second pledge death at Chico since 2000, when an 18-year-old died of alcohol poisoning.

The university cut its ties to Chi Tau in 2002 because of "a series of increasing problems and complaints," including excessive alcohol use and loud parties, a campus spokesman said.

I heard it happens to some kids dancing and taking Xtacy. They get real hot and thirsty, chug tons of water, and the above happens.

hazing is bad. when will these kids learn? they need to charge the leaders of the fraternity with manslaughter and send them to the FPMITAP for a couple years.

My friend had that a few years back. He hit his head and slipped into a coma for 4 days. He's better now. :)

Good use of the acronym FPMITAP! And I agree, the people involved should be charged.

I was in a fraternatity, and saw some amazing things that people did simply because it was deemed ok by their social setting.

Ever see a girlfriend get traded for a ps2? I have. Fully willing too.

We always bought a few quarts of Gatorade and bottled water before a night of xtacy in high school. Xtacy makes it so you really don't want to eat anything and Gatorade is about the only thing besides water that is easy to drink. My buddy tried orange juice after seeing the movie, Go, but he said it made him feel a bit queasy.

Well, you get my vote for absolute moron of the day. Marathon runners/athletes drink sports drinks to replenish their electrolytes. Its not healthy to drink just sports drink either. You need about a 1 to 1 ratio with water.

And if you overdrank sports drink, dont you think that its like 99% water and could possibly kill you?

Uh, salt is Sodium Chloride - which is an electrolyte. I haven't looked at the label on a gatoraide bottle in some time but I remember reading an interview with the creator and he said something like it was a fairly simple formula you could whip up yourself - most people just bought it though.

You can take salt tablets with water to help stave off dehyrdation as well. Doesn't the military hand them out?

No descision has been made to file charges? It's murder. WHy do they think Hazing is illegal? Just for fun? Bunch of morons deserve to go to jail for killing a kid that just wanted to get into their organization.

* DHMO is an "enabling component" of acid rain -- in the absence of sufficient quantities of DHMO, acid rain is not a problem.

* DHMO is a causative agent in most instances of soil erosion -- sufficiently high levels of DHMO exacerbate the negative effects of soil erosion.

* DHMO is present in nearly every creek, stream, pond, river, lake and reservoir in the U.S. and around the world.

* Measurable levels of DHMO have been verified in ice samples taken from both the Arctic and Antarctic ice caps.

* Recent massive DHMO exposures have lead to the loss of life and destruction of property in California, the Mid-West, the Philippines, and a number of islands in the Caribbean, to name just a few.

That's some serisous sh!t.

This one was always my favorite complaint about dihydrogen monoxide.

I've been through basic training. They do make you drink lots of water, but not even close to an amount that can kill you. They make you drink 16oz every hour.
