Watching HDTV on an EDTV set - thoughts?

Just recently purchased a [relatively] cheap 42'' plasma EDTV (480p). Its primary usage is for xbox/ps2, and dvd. (which is why i didnt go the extra 2k for HD). However, it will take in HD programming in 720 or 1080 and down convert it to 480.

now my questions are: will a down converted hd signal look better than a de-interlaced 480i signal? If nothing else i figure it will take advatage of the native widescreen broadcasts.

second, is it worth it? anyone else in the same situation?

seeing the HD PVR for 10 dollars a month through comcast is what is putting the thought in my head. If i can do this, only paying 10 dollars for a tuner plus PVR... well why not? right?

My friend has 42 inch Panasonic EDTV, looks great. Hard to tell the difference from that and real HD at reasonable viewing distances.

? i don't get your question.

if you mean 480i from standard def tv, yes the hd down convert will look better. 4:3 use even less of the few pixels you have.

my question basically sums down to this. Is it worth it to get an HD tuner for my tv, even though it is only capable of 480p?

yes 🙂

still better then a basic tv 😛

how much was it and where did u get it?

Yes it looks much better than even 480p (progressive scan DVD)... I have an AE100 projector and it does the same thing, HD content looks much better.

Yes, it looks better, but once you see what HDTV is supposed to look like you will want to upgrade. I did. I went from the Panasonic PT-L300U to the Panasonic PT-AE700U.
