Watching A.I. -- When should I turn it off?

I've never seen this movie before. Many of my friends say it's not too bad until the last "part" of the movie.

One of them says I should watch it 2/3 through then turn it off so I won't have a permanently sour taste in my mouth from the film. What do you think?

The end is great, the people who complain about the ending must have missed the ENTIRE point of the movie. If you are a Kubrick fan, then go ahead and watch the ending. If you want to take the advice of those who didnt get the movie, stop as David makes his descent into the water.
 
amnesiac 2.0, while I personally didn't like the ending that much, watch the whole movie so that you can make up your own opinion on it 🙂

hmm...i thought the "kubrick" type of ending woulda ended when they're under water.......and spielburg..being the overall crowd pleaser (but yeah, i knw he is a great director..just that..this movie..mmmeh..) added the next 10 minutes or so afterwards...
 
Well, if you dont like the topic of the movie, you should recommend people not watch it, instead of recommending they stop at certain points.

Kubrick's original drafts for the movie included the final 1/3 of the movie. Without it the story goes nowhere. With the ending in place, the movie makes its full statement.

I dont think he wants spoilers in this thread. Ill be vague. The movie is split into three parts. Each part has a mood. Each part tells a different story. They are all interlinked by David. Why?

Edit: There is no "lesser beings". I have seen the movie many times and read the original short story. I have given it much discussion and thought to come to my conclusions, as I do with all Kubrick movies. Just like a good book. AI is not a movie that you watch, enjoy, leave and dont think about again. If you do that you wont like it.
 
trying not to put a spoiler, my advice would be watch the whole thing, b/c the ending ties in with an important theme throughout the movie. I originally saw A.I. in a theater full of people who all started to get up when they thought it was over-as such, they grumbled throughout the remaining 20 minutes or so and, in all likelyhood, ruined my initial perspective of the film. having since watched it again, I can see where the temptation to end it exists, but I can see that the last 20 minutes or so is definitely important to the plot.

 
Kubrick is a great film guy...Eyes Wide Shut...the black & white scene with Nicole Kidman and the Sailor guy..priceless
 
Just don't watch it at all and let all your friends make your decisions for you. That way you don't have to think about things and you can just play computer games all day.

I don't think it's entirely a happy ending.

While david did spend a day's worth of happy time with her mother, he has to live all alone for the rest of his supposingly long life.

Well obviously you either think this movie is blah, you hate it, or like it. I like it a lot. I just knew the underwater part wasnt the ending..

benliong, not only was it only a day, and his moms spirit was never able to come back again, but he dies on the bed, he shuts himself off basically (or so it appears). And then the bear! What the hell does he do...he just sits on the bed at the end. And that bear was cool!
 
well if you want the spoiler, the end critters weren't aliens.


everything after david is unfrozen is in VR. the future robos pull a fast one on david.
 
It was an interesting movie but not compelling enough to really think about all of the themes and symbolism etc. in it. I think it should come with cliff's notes 🙂
