Watch TV on laptop over wifi?

Here's the setup I have: pc with TV tuner and wireless network connection, also a laptop with wireless.

Would I be able to somehow stream the TV through my network from my desktop to be able to watch TV wirelessly on my laptop? Wondering if this is possible...

I know you can do it with a pocket pc using the terminal window client. I think to get the same functionality you would need something to loginto and use your computer romotely. Basically making you laptop a mirrored screen of your desktop. Look into remote managers (sorry the name eludes me). I dont' know of any other software that does this. Snapstream, maybe?

If you have a replay TV you can use DVArchive.

Check also into VLC media player. That will let you play captured vids over a network.

I just don't know about live TV.

Doesn't Windows XP have remote desktop connection built in? Wouldn't that work?

No, that wont work since terminal services refreshes far too slow.

You need third party software such as beyondtv or sagetv. Both are finicky though and may not work with older tv capture cards. Alternatively, windows media edition can do network tv watching but it supports very few capture cards.

If you just want to stream saved captured stuff, then you can use the free open source videolan http://www.videolan.org/

You could set up a network and use the desktop as a server. There also may be a way to do it using some type on VPN setup. They also sell USB tv tuners where you could just connect your cable to the tuner and watch tv on the lappy.

Thanks for the links everybody.

It looks like Beyond TV Link paired with Beyond TV from SnapStream would do exactly what I want, which is to watch live tv wirelessly on the laptop. I'm going to check this stuff out this weekend and I'll post some reviews after.

Edit: Here's the site for Beyond TV Link.

Edit 2: Actually after looking again, Beyond TV won't work for me. Their software has limited TV Tuner support, basically you need to have a hauppauge. I'll keep searching for similar software and let you guys know if I see anything. Also, I think the word you were looking for was a VNCServer or as Windows calls it Remote Desktop Connection. I use this almost every day for work and school and it deffinately is too slow to stream live TV over, even on an internal network connection.

i would just get the recommended turner from ebay. They are cheap and it will solve your problems.

You'r TV card records to a file on the HD right? If so you can just access that file over the network and play it using VLC, works great for me. Only drawback is that you don't have any direct control over the playing, for that you'll have to use VNC or such.

Yes but live TV should be recored to a temp file on the HDD (that's how GBPvr works anyway), you can play that file (and thus watch live TV) using VLC.
