HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - A 38-year-old father of two was jogging and listening to his iPod when he was hit from behind and killed by a small plane making an emergency landing on the beach, officials said Tuesday.

Robert Gary Jones of Woodstock, Ga., was killed instantly on Hilton Head Island on Monday evening, said Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.

The single-engine plane had lost its propeller and the pilot's vision was blocked by oil on the windshield, Allen said.

I run against traffic but here it's a plane from behind....The plane was basically gliding w/o a prop but I bet you'd still hear whistling air if ipod wasn't in his ears.

I doubt it would be audible over ocean waves. Lancairs are tiny and very aerodynamic. Just looking at a photo should give you a good idea of that: http://www.lancair.com/Main/iv_ivp.html

It's an incredible little plane. 300 knot cruise at 24000' in a single engine prop plane? Outrageous.

But it's also a kit plane. You buy the parts and build it yourself at home. I've never even heard of a plane so poorly put together that its propeller was "lost" in flight. I don't know whether Lancair's design or the guy who put it together is at fault, but someone did something seriously wrong.

And considering that this is in the health and fitness forum...uh, running faster decreases your chance of being hit from behind by a plane, so work on speed.

Incredible speed. Wow. You'd think prop would have some kind of reverse threads like a angle grinder so it couldn't come off.

Don't some safety authority recommend not wearing headphones while doing physical activity in public?

I guess the lesson here is to uh, don't jog on the beach with an ipod.

If it's prop was off you might not hear it even if you weren't listening to music.

I NEVER run with my mp3 player on. I never considered this possibility though, yikes...

Me neither. Usually I just have to worry about vehicles (easy to hear) and bikes (those lightweight racing bikes are surprisingly silent).

This is a freakish occurrence though.

running with headphones like over ear/foam you can hear around you (providing you aren't jamming too loud).

In ear buds effectively separate you from your surroundings.

That said...he was on a freaking beach, not much worry of a car. Even without the earphones he may have not had time to react.

Even off road I don't wear my mp3 player. I have been snuck up on by wild and domestic dogs, and there are worries about mountain lions and black bear in the woods and hills in my area. I have to stay aware as much as possible. It's just better to never wear them when out running.
