Wasted $140 on a plumber, could have done it myself.

Yeah plumbers arn't cheap, especially after hours service calls. I had to call a plumbing company to come unblock my main drain line on a Sunday once. Honestly I was expecting to pay more, but it was still like 200 bucks. Not something I could have done myself though. Needed a special truck with a 5000psi hose (yes, 5 THOUSAND psi) to clear it up. I had a cold and the main line just got blocked with mucus and toilet paper. Now I know to flush the toilet several times if I throw stuff like that down there, to make sure it goes all the way to the bigger city line and does not just sit in my line.

Plumbers are also in high demand. Often it's hard to even find one, they're booked solid.

People always laugh at that job and look at it as being a low status job, but hey, people will always need water, and they will always have to poop. Probably one of the most secure jobs out there. :p

I think the solution is to throw the toilet paper in the garbage instead of flushing it down the toilet?

Yeah, but you don't really want all those germs floating around when you have a cold, either, you want to flush it away and keep stuff as sterile as possible so you can get rid of that cold.

I think the issue was lots of toilet paper, not enough water. So it was just accumulating in the line instead of flushing out. In a typical day you probably tend to use more water than toilet paper so that last time you flushed toilet paper down it may not have made it to the end in that one flush, but washing your hands, perhaps a couple pees or using the kitchen sink etc eventually flushed that one piece of toilet paper down. When you're getting up every 5 minutes to blow your nose, throwing it in the toilet and flushing once, it just all accumulates.

At least that's my theory, anyway.

When my bro was 12, he knew he wanted to be one. Started working for a local guy. At 16, he and the school board agreed that it would be best that they parted company.:D After embarrassing my Mom a lot, his parting shot was, "And I'm going to make more $$ than all of you." Damned if he hasn't...a lot more $$ judging by his toys.

If all else fails you can manually push in the blow-off valve outside at the meter, a pair of pliers will easily remove the plastic cover. I used to have to reset them all the time on new constructions.

But really, why complain about something you cannot do. Never understood that. It's one thing to bitch about cost, but to say you wasted the money and then say it was a learning experience.....sheesh.

Yeah I get it all the time. Hey that was easy I could've done that. Those guys are generally idiots because if you could've you would've. Note this one broke the valve just trying to take the stove flex line off. Guessing somebody turned the wrong way or had the wrenchs in the wrong place. 95% of the time you can look at there last home improvement project and see the bad work they are so proud of.

The shut-off at the meter is the main shut-off and the plumber is a hack for not using it.
