Wasp stings and swelling

Many years ago, I was at a neighbor's farm, standing beside a tractor, and when my dad started it up, a bunch of wasps flew out of the front of it, and one stung me on the top of my left hand. My hand and arm were swollen (to the point of me being barely able to move my fingers) for a little less than a week, IIRC. I saw a doctor about it, and he said that I needed to try to avoid contact with wasps, bees, etc., as I might have an even worse allergic reaction to them in the future. I live on a farm. Right.

That was when I was in elementary school... maybe 3rd or 4th grade? I have somehow managed to not get stung by any insects/animals... until yesterday. I was working on my uncle's combine, and when I started the engine, a bunch of wasps flew out of the engine bay, and right into the cab. I stopped the engine and got out of there, but not before a wasp stung me... in the exact same spot I was stung way back when. My arm didn't swell up, nor most of my hand, but the area immediately surrounding the sting is swollen - on the back of my hand, between my index finger and thumb. And every time I move either my index finger or thumb, it itches like none other.

How long is swelling & itching normal for wasp stings (on average)? Anyone here have experience with that? I did a really quick google, and found that swelling and itching are normal, but I didn't really see any time frame. And because I haven't created a thread on ATOT in a while, I decided I'd stir up a little trouble.

It varies.

My experience with stings is that they usually stop bothering me after a day or two, but it varies person to person it seems.

Sounds like you've got a pretty normal wasp sting there. I'd give the itching about 3 days to subside if you don't aggravate it (by actually scratching of course).

Thanks  I'll give it another day or two - I'm sure it will be cleared up. It's not really bothering me, other than the itching... I'm just glad that I'm not going through a repeat of last time. ;)

Sry, you are going to die.

Troll elsewhere.

Haha.

Take a couple asprin, about 2 or 3 200mg pills. Smash them up into a kind of powder, mix with a little Visene or some such substitute. Get it to the consistancy of paste. Slop some on the sing site and put a band-aid over it.

That's what gramps always did when I got stung by a wasp, bee, etc. It made the swelling go down a little, but helped with the pain and itching quite well. It's worked for me over the years, and the wife and kids also seemed to see the effects.
