they should give you back $5.09 or $5.10, if they gave you back $5 then I guess they helped themselves to a 9 cent tip.
 
WTF. I can't believe people bitching about 9 frickin cents.
The thing is most servers are their own bank. They don't carry change with them.
If you were paying at the cashier then yeah I would have a problem not getting exact change back.
A few pennies is hardly worth bitching about.
