The WA GOP put it in writing that they’re not into democracy

Seems that there are red crazies even in a solidly blue state. 😒

A resolution called for ending the ability to vote for U.S. senators. Instead, senators would get appointed by state legislatures, as it generally worked 110 years ago prior to the passage of the 17th Amendment in 1913.

“We are devolving into a democracy, because congressmen and senators are elected by the same pool,” was how one GOP delegate put it to the convention. “We do not want to be a democracy.”

They passed a resolution calling on people to please stop using the word “democracy.”

“We encourage Republicans to substitute the words ‘republic’ and ‘republicanism’ where previously they have used the word ‘democracy,’ ” the resolution says. “Every time the word ‘democracy’ is used favorably it serves to promote the principles of the Democratic Party, the principles of which we ardently oppose.”

The resolution sums up: “We … oppose legislation which makes our nation more democratic in nature.”

Living in Washington, this isn’t a surprise. More than 2/3 of the state (by area, not population) leans red. Overall, other than the Seattle area, Washington runs more purple than blue.

I had the distinct displeasure of being in Woodinville for lunch when a "Trump Train" rolled through back in 2020. I see folks in Safeway and Costco in their "Let's Go Brandon" and "Fuck Joe Biden" shirts, and just the other day an SUV with a Trump-DeSantis 2024 sticker on the back glass, that one must have a real hard-on for fascism.

If I were a conspiracist I’d say it’s because they don’t want their supporters to think of our form of government as a type of democracy so that when they usher in fascism it will be an easier sell/brainwashing.
