Is this a joke? We are fielding what is essentially a high school caliber team. USC wins, and moves up 5 spots in the AP poll? In my experience watching college sports, for that to happen the No. 12 would usually have to beat the No. 4 or so to get there.

USC? do questions need to be asked...

not saying I agree b/c I don't...but they get so much slack from the media et al.

Look at Oklahoma...they lose one..to a ranked team(BYU), when there QB gets hurt...it takes them two weeks to climb back into the top 10, and they are still ranked behind USC.

This. Cal, Ole Miss, Penn State, and Miami all fell from the top ten to no higher than 15 (PSU). Every team behind them that won jumped 4 spots as a result. The only team that USC leap-frogged was Oklahoma.

Pre-season and early-season polls are a fucking joke anyway. How in the world can teams be ranked going into the season? No one's played a game. I love it when a high-ranked team loses early, then someone says they were overrated anyway. Huh? How is a team overrated when they haven't played anyone yet?

College football is quickly becoming a joke of a sport with this type of nonsense in combination with the ridiculous BCS.

And yes, USC moved up because teams above them lost. Although it doesn't really matter because the rankings are a joke right now.

true.. especially since VT crushed #9 Miami

in that case Nebraska should be ranked lower

Miami = overrated

Miami is not overrated. They have lots of young talent and were beaten by a good VT team with experience. I'm not a Miami fan by any means, but they are going to be very good the next two years.

We have this complaint at the start every year and just about every year it works itself out in the end with a couple of exceptions (undefeated Auburn team). Could the system be better? Absolutely. But don't expect it to change until 2016 (I think that is the year) at the earliest. For all the bitching, this is still better than the pre-BCS days IMHO as far as determining a 'mythical champion' goes. They need to work on the non-BCS Championship bowl matchups though.

Nobody is going to hold off on rankings until a few weeks into the season like many suggest because that wouldn't give the sports journalists/talking head anything to talk about. Best we can hope for is that they begin making some changes when the current BCS contract is up. My vote is to start with the +1 game. Maybe they'll have a full playoff system by the time my grandkids arrive.

Only 1A, everyone else is smart enough to have a playoff.
I think there will still be bitching even with a playoff system.

You really cant dispute a playoff system. It works in EVERY other sport for a reason.

Randy Shannon came in and recruited his ass off. He's a very good coach and now he has the talent to make some noise. They are still young, and it showed on the road against a good Virginia Tech team. But, they were very impressive opening the season at Florida State and in beating a top 15 Georgia Tech team. They still have the athletic talent and coaching to beat just about any team around on any given Saturday. They will be a top 5 team within the next two years.

Just because they aren't in the top ten doesn't mean they aren't good. You don't have to be a top ten team to be able to play ball.

Looking @ the 2007 season and the number of upsets we saw, a playoff system would screw things up more. The current system works just fine. The only problem is that it overlooks some teams sometimes. So unless you're USC 2003, Auburn 2004, and Utah in '08, I don't see what difference it really makes.

You still have a regular season, and you play till the end where you have a playoffs instead of the current bowl games. That way when Oregon gets screwed and gets sent to the Holiday Bowl, they can complain less because technically in a playoffs series they can somehow still become the champion. So WTF is the point? You can have a season of upsets still in 2007, and the wrong teams can get in your playoffs system of 8 teams or 16 teams or whatever right? You could have a Oregon collapse in 2007 and while that team is still a top team, it's no longer in the playoffs.

The current system has its flaws. It's a different way of looking at a winner, but it's still a stamina test no matter what... just like any playoffs system tests a team's ability to make it to the top.

In the end who cares if you made it to #3 or #4 or #5 or whatever? We only care about #1. I suppose everyone's just bitter that after a season of upsets they are locked into a crappier bowl and not the BCS championship bowl. You had your chance during the season. What makes you think a playoffs system will make you come out #1 all of a sudden? I guess the concept of having the ability to still come out on top is nice. A playoffs system is just a chance at #1 again.... unless you remove the entire ranking system as it stands. But what fun would college football be without weekly rankings? You would play it like football and shoot for a division record? This just means that SEC will only care about SEC, and will bitch more when a Big 10 or Pac-10 team gets the same opportunity but is supposedly "overrated."

i like how the NCAA admits there is no real national champion in 1A college football by naming 1AA the 'championship subdivision.'

Whatever. The ACC sucks. UM, FSU, and GT are overrated along with VT. UM barely beat FSU and then FSU gets pimped slapped at Doak by a USF.

VT was manhandled by Bama and NU and was lucky as it gets to win in Blacksburg. If not for the 4 consecutives penalties to push NU from the goal line to punting, VT loses.

UM beats the crap out of GT and then gets destroyed by VT. Crappy football.
