FALLS CHURCH, Va. -- The Washington-area sniper's latest slaying has yielded the most detailed clues yet in the search for the elusive killer: information about license plates and the description of a man in a white van seen fleeing the attack.

In another development, the Pentagon has agreed to provide aerial surveillance in the hunt for a sniper who has terrorized the Washington, D.C., suburbs for the past two weeks, killing nine and injuring two.

The new clues surfaced in the Monday night slaying of FBI employee Linda Frank after she and her husband loaded their purchases from a Home Depot into their car.

For the first time, witnesses were able to give information about license plates on vehicles they said were fleeing the scene. Some described a light-colored Chevrolet Astro van with a burned-out rear taillight.

At least one witness saw a male sniper aim and fire, then flee in a van, The Washington Post reported Wednesday. The newspaper cited anonymous law enforcement sources.

"There was some additional information that we were able to get from (Monday) night's case, and I am confident that that information is going to lead us to an arrest in the case," Fairfax County Police Chief Tom Manger said.

Robert Young, a Washington construction worker, was among witnesses who returned to the shopping center Tuesday to talk with police. He said he had heard a muffled gunshot and seen a white van Monday night.

Young said as he backed his truck out of his parking spot, a white Astro van with two men inside tried to turn into his lane. He said the driver appeared very agitated to find his way blocked and instead drove by a neighboring restaurant and out of sight.

Young described the driver as a short man of slight build who appeared to be Middle Eastern. "I got a good look at the guy," he said.

The driver "seemed to be excessively irritated because he couldn't pull into my lane," he said. "I thought this fool was going to want to get out of the van and duke or something. But he didn't. He kept on going."

Law enforcement sources told The Associated Press there was no indication the sniper targeted Franklin, 47, because of her job with the FBI's Cyber-Crimes Division, created last year to focus on computer crimes as well as intellectual property cases.

In Maryland, Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose, the head of the investigation, emphasized that Franklin was not working on the sniper case.

With the terrifying spree two weeks old, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld agreed Tuesday evening to provide military surveillance aircraft in the hunt for the killer, a Pentagon spokesman said. Sources said federal agents on the plane will relay any information they collect to authorities on the ground.

The Army also has started searching its records for people with sniper training.

Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge said investigators are hesitant to rule out the possibility that the slayings are the work of a terrorist because there is no hard evidence about motive.

Each of the victims was cut down with a single bullet fired from a distance by a high-powered rifle. All were going about everyday tasks.

Last week police found a tarot death card at a crime scene inscribed, "Dear Policeman, I am God."

In a continuing appeal for the public's help, Moose released composite images of a white van with roof racks that witnesses saw after Friday's slaying of a man at a gas station near Fredericksburg, Va.

Moose said there appeared to be similarities between the van seen at Friday's shooting and the van from Monday night's attack. Manger would not say whether witnesses to the latest attack were able to give complete license plate numbers to investigators.

"Each shooting has revealed more to this investigation. We're encouraged every day," said Michael Bouchard, an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

The man seems to think the Middle Eastern driver of the van was involved. Two men in the van. Al Queda? Maybe.

an he's automatically a terrorist because he's brown? I heard on the news the man was described as being dark skinned, either latino or middle-eastern, but not black.

people jumped to the same conclusions after the Okla. City bombing which was obviously before the 9/11 hysteria.

Al Queda has suddenly been using snipers elsewhere on the world stage. Not only that but they've been operating in pairs and not as lone gunmen in the sniper attack in the Far East. The focus has been on the economy, not on anyone in particular. The sniper attacks are aimed at people generally in business parking lots. Only the tarot card (with "I am God" msg.) and the school shooting point away from this pattern, although the other nine attacks do follow the pattern.

Would an Islamist use a tarot card? If so would he say, "I am God"? Why not "I am Allah"? An I haven't heard any Islamist claiming to be Allah.

Unfortunately there are plenty of nuts in the world and plenty of terrorist networks (dozens in fact).

Either way this spank-off must be brought to justice.

Allah is God. That's how they knew the Anthrax letters were not Islamic terrorism. They said "Praise Allah" not simply "Praise God".

Is THIS sniper al queda? probably not. He is probably a home grown lunatic living out his last wishes of infamy.

DO I think the real al queda are paying attention to what this one lone man is doing? hell yeah. Here is one man, who has practically the whole eastern sea board quaking in thier boots in fear over being the next victim, which is exactly what these terrorists overseas are trying to accomplish (along with other economical objectives)

Imagine what 5 or 10 of these "snipers" could do in well placed and well populated communities in our nation. Can you imagine a "sniper" in LA next? or maybe in Seattle? each taking thier time and going on road trips, stopping by just long enough to systematically hunt and kill a person at RANDOM, yeah that could get a little scary.

DO I think this one sniper is al queda? no.....

DO I think he is doing one hell of a Bin Ladin impersonation? yes.

nice to see the justice and defense departments being active in the hunt.

I think this person is a nut who enjoys the pub he's been getting. I think they should stop talking about it on the news, Then maybe this guy will screw up trying to be more bold.

All we need to know is there was another shooting. The cops still have no clue. Tim e for the media to take some responsibity and stop spending 20 of the 22 minutes of national news on this wacko.

If this idea is so implausible then why is the FBI asking the Pentagon to interview suspected Al Queda agents in the Gauntamano (sp?) prison?

A red herring. A clue meant to be found to confuse the investigaters.

LOL..

Do you think that he only wounded the two that weren't killed on purpose? Hmmm.... Where were they shot at? lol...

It's doubtful that he will stop at this point.. the cops are apparently clueless.

OrByte - I've been thinking the exact same thing.......

The federal officials were in a panic to disprove these killings as terrorism and to blame them on a wacko.

As the facts finally started leaking the shift seems to have moved over to it possibly being a team of terrorists.

Now they have retracted almost all of the information on the killer to further confuse the public.

I wonder how quickly this may have been solved if they just labelled it as "terrorism" from the start. In a situation with a serial killer you want to piss them off so that they personalize their killings, moving into a bold and reckless phase, that eventually expose them. Serial killers in the past have been pretty consistent - they eventually self destruct which leads to their discovery. Psychotic people cannot hold their emotions in check forever you know. This is real life, not some grizzly seen from Hannibal where the killer always gets away.

It wouldn't be unusual for any one random wacko to do something like this, but *two*?
The method is excellent : from inside a van (w/ no windows) you can open the side or back door and be blocked from view from 3 sides from people seeing you, while you set up and aim. The other person is a lookout and can also further "hide" what the shooter is doing. Sounds like terrorism to me--think about it, 'you're not safe in your own nation's capital'--sounds like a message.
