After owning a front loader, I could never go back to a top loader.

What's the big difference? The way the clothes are agitated?

More environmentally friendly
Does a better job cleaning
More delicate to clothes, clothes don't get snagged/twisted around the agitator
Clothes come out dryer, so I can hang-dry a lot of stuff and don't need to throw them in the dryer
Quieter (my washer/dryer are located in my bedroom)

With that many positives over top loading it sounds like they should be standard. Is there some big drawback or something? More expensive or leak prone or something?

The expense, special detergent is required.

I've never seen "front loader detergent", at least around here anyway..

It's called High Efficiency Detergent.

linky

It's pricy but a little bottle lasts a long time.

you dont NEED to use HE detergent, but it is better, it foams less and such, you can use normal detergent just use less then you would for a toploader

Most front loaders are the same size as top loader. If you plan on keeping it for 3+ years i would go with a good front loader. It has already been said why to get them over a top so i will not repeat but just agree its worth it.

And they said you need a special detergent when front loaders came out but not so much now. I use regular detergent on the front loader we are using and it works just fine. Same with the softner.

The LG Tromm says use only HE detergent. They don't have a whole lot to gain by saying that, so I do use it.
