It runs through the agitate cycle just fine. But when it gets to the rinse and spin cycle, it sounds like the motor is spinning, but the tub doesn't spin. It also makes a slight burning smell.
Any ideas?

Just load it up with clothes and keep running it. Usually a slight burning smell means nothing like plastic melting or gears stripping. Most large appliances tend to fix themselves if you just run them a little harder than normal after they seem broken.

Either take the damn thing apart or call a repair technician.

Might have toasted the belt or maybe the motor is starting to go I would call a repair man.

There are clutches and other such mechanisms on a washer, I think..

Find a washer forum. :D Or call a repairman.

OK, I'll give that a try. You really think if I just keep running it, it will fix itself? that is great news. Thanks so much man.

Jeez smartass, It's not like I kept running it while it was smoking and on fire.

I did a load of towels and when I went to get them out, there were still suds on them. I thought maybe one of the towels had been used to clean up some soap or something so I figured I'd just run them again. A little while after starting the washer again, I went in to see if they were done and that is when I realized the tub wasn't spinning and there was a faint electrical smell. I turned it off immediately.

Look people, I'm fully aware of the fact that there are professionals who will gladly come to my house and fix my washing machine for a large sum of money.

It's not like I'm complaining of chest pain and asking if I should perform surgery on myself.

I've never fixed a washing machine, but I'm quite certain I could handle it myself and save some money if it is something like:

So I was hoping that others who no more about it than myself might be able to take an educated guess at what the problem is.

I've only had this washer for about a year and a half. Of course the warranty only lasts for a year.:|

So look at it and figure out how to open it up (do washing machines open, or do you just tip them over?) and look for a black rubber belt that isn't where it's supposed to be. Or is where it isn't supposed to be. Once you've found it, if it appears defective, take it to a hardware or appliance store and purchase one that looks just like it. Return home, replace belt, rinse towels. And do unplug it before you start anything.

LOL, the more I read that statement, the more I think it would be great for my sig.

I'm not angry. Just annoyed by all the "call a repairman" responses. I wasn't expecting everyone to be able to diagnose my washer problem. I just thought maybe someone had a similar issue and might know what it was.

That happened to ours a few months ago. We ended up replacing it with a shiny new one. Actually, we called maintenance and they did it for free. :)

That's what I plan to do. i think the back panel comes off.

If you smell burning rubber, then it's defnitely the belt.

I don't think I smelled rubber. It smelled more like when you have an electric motor burning up.

Yep, one of the few things I miss about being a renter.

Since the motor works, my guess is the actuator solenoid for the clutch/transmission which seems to agree with why it won't operate in one mode. Have to see diagrams and schematic to really say anything...

Mine did this and it was the motor. I have a friend who had the same thing happen and it was his motor. Pray it is the belt.

If you plan on repairing it yourself, and you can't run anything in it right now anyway, why don't you just open it up and have a look see. The problem might point itself out.

I just took my washer apart last week for a repair. I had never done this before. It was a damn menace to take apart too. Replacing the belt took 10 sec but taking it apart and putting it back together took >2hours. Get ready for some fun times.....NOT!
