washing machine on its way out, want to replace with washer/dryer set

recommendations?

the current one came with the house and is about 11 years old. we want to replace it with a front loader washer/dryer set. any recommendations? i don't have a consumers report sub and don't have time to go to the library...

haven't shop for washer/dryers before and there are so many brands. if you recently bought a set, what did you buy and would you recommend it?

whatever you buy, make sure you check to see what your state's cash for appliances rules are to get some money back
 
It's impressive how little water a Front Load Washer uses. Used one at my Bros during XMas and couldn't believe that it would clean my clothes, but it did.

That's what I'm leaning towards for my next machine. Balance issues, and leakage keep it from being a slam dunk though.

the washer won't start until it can lock the door. so the only real concern is seal failure, which can happen with a normal tub as well.

As if top loaders don't have balance issues or leak issues?

Get a front loader....you won't regret it. We love our set and will never go back to a top loading machine, no matter how cheap they get.
 
I bought a Fridgidaire Affinity series front loader and it's amazing. I don't see how leaking can be an issue.

Yea, I know. It's just the vibe I've gotten from reading people's experiences make it sound like front loaders can be a little more quirky. I haven't done any real research though, so that may not be accurate. I keep coming back to the fact that many commercial machines are front loaders. I'd think if they sucked, they wouldn't use them :^)

thanks for the suggestion...so is it correct that the "good" ones will set me back about $2k for a washer/dryer set? its confusing because i see $700 front loaders and also $1k front loaders. besides capacity i'm not sure what the differences are or what to look for...

My Bro's had numerous settings like the Spin Speed setting. Which you might like because you can set it Up/Down to avoid unbalancing.
 
Spent $600 on a new front loader last week ($400 after the trade in program). It is a pain in the backside to use and I miss the simplicity of my old top loader. :'(
 
We bought a Frigidaire laundry center in late 08 and love it. Gas dryer, front load washer, they are stacked but full size units. The low water usage is pretty impressive, clothes are clean, dryer has the moisture detection and works good.

It's pretty basic controls, just the regular knobs which are a plus in my book, my mom had a fancy washer with digital controls and when the board goes on those = $$$. Versus the old controls which are pretty cheap to fix.

We don't use the HE detergent but just use concentrated stuff, very small amounts. Every couple months I run an empty cycle with bleach in detergent and bleach dispensers, and we leave the door open after a load to let it air out. No problems with mold/mildew to this point. No problems with unbalanced loads yet, it's pretty good at slowing down and giving the load a spin the other way to fix things if needed.

Also, it has a window on the front so I can watch the clothes spin around 😀

I was referring to the washer. You have to clean this one after use, be careful adding ONLY expensive HE detergent, etc.

Overall its a better machine and I will adapt, but you cant do whatever you feel like with it like you can a durable top loader. This is an expensive and delicate machine that will cost you big if you dont follow directions.

The door on them is much smaller. When you need to get the clothes out of them, you need to bend down a lot further to get your arm into the back of the machine. It's probably worth it to spend the ~$200 (at least I'm pretty sure that's what they go for) to get the optional stands for your washing machine so that it's higher off the ground.

My washing machine crapped out a couple of weeks ago and I went out in search of a replacement. I wanted something that I could leave the store with that day, so my options were limited. The funny thing about Washing Machines is that they only break when you need to use them. So without doing any reasearch (not typical for me), I ended up with a Whirlpool Duet High Efficiency front-loader. These things are not cheap at all. If I knew now what I know then:
-I would have bought a larger one. Mine is 4 cu.ft. Definitely would have gotten at least 4.4
-I would have spent a little more to get one of the ones that has a Steam cycle, because a couple of my coworkers said that the ones that can steam are awesome for dress shirts, slacks, etc.

Looking back, the way I see it is, if you're going to spend a grand on a washing machine, you might as well spend another 400-500 for the bigger/better one.

What do you mean clean after use? I don't know a single front loader that requires that. Some have lint traps that need to cleaned out on occasion and some have drainage hoses for removing any excess water but I don't need to do it every couple of months.

And HE detergent is not expensive. At Costco, I can get a 120 load bottle of Kirkland's detergent which is HE compatible for $15.

OP - I recommend LG and Samsung as brands.
