It is time to upgrade the old washer and dryer and I am looking for recommendations on a High Efficiency pair. Looking for top loads with no agitator in the washer.

What do you recommend?

I've got a Maytag Centennial from Lowe's that I've had around a year. I really like it. For the lower end it's a solid machine.

Cheap Chinese off-brand.

They're probably manufacturing the 'name brands' sitting beside them, anyhow.

You're in the Samsung Onyx range but, there's no reason to spend that kind of money unless you have 6 kids and a daycare center. Buy used. You'll save a ton of money and get better service than buying high end appliances new.

We have this one and love it:

If you are going HE, my advice is to really give a lot of consideration to an HE top loader. I've had 3 front load washers, and all of them developed severe mold problems. Don't let the sales reps fool you. Even the new front loaders have that problem, and it aint as easy to correct as they will make out. We've had the top loader for 2+ years now and no mold issues whatsoever. Plus the model we have has more capacity and is quieter that any of the front loaders we previously owned.

You are supposed to leave the door ajar a little on front loaders. Never had a problem with mold. If you close it every time you will though.

I say get some front loaders and stack em.

Just wait for a sale. They have $2000 sets for like $1200 all the time. I just got a pair of Samsungs for that price. They are really nice. Got em at Sears.

Let me make it clear. I do not want a front loader.

Whatever basic GE set. I have GE Profiles and would not buy again...because they don't clean any better than basic models.

FWIW, we had a Kenmore (Whirlpool) Calypso. No agitator in that either...and it was the worst washer we've ever had. Clothes just didn't seem to get as clean as they do in an agitator-type machine.
Whirlpool has a newer model out, (Oasis? Cabrio) that's also agitator-missing...and you couldn't give me one...unless I was able to immediately trade it in on a model with an agitator.

This Samsung is pretty nice. If you're in the Washington DC metro area ours is for sale, less than 1 year old. (we moved across country into a rental house which included a W/D set).

Im still trying to decide on a He top loader or a front loader(dont mind leaving the door open) The problem i am having is

Front loaders don't seem to use enough water to clean

Top HE loaders don't look like they turn/ rotate the cloths enough

I have been watching youtube video so thats all i have to go by. For all you recommending top load HE washers do you think they do a really good job at cleaning? What about whites if they go in dingy do they come out thoroughly clean? Also some reviews say because of the balancing it take a very long time for a load to finish. and sometime clothes come out tangled.

We purchased a Whirlpool Cabrio Platinum TL HE washer and matching dryer from Lowes 8 months ago. They had a 10% off sale and used a 10% off moving coupon, <$1500. for both, with free delivery and setup. We also had some concerns about it not doing a good job washing. The washer does an excellent job at cleaning clothes, especially whites, while using less water and detergent.
Ours has a direct drive motor and auto sensing to adjust the water amount for the load size. Wash times vary for different settings from 38 min for Quick Wash, 39 min Delicate, 55 min Normal, to 78 min Heavy Duty and 79 min for Whites.

Why would you say this? Just because one might not have anyone else to clean for doesn't mean they shouldn't have nice things.

Wife and I (no one else in our home) spent $2500 and we are not sorry for it either. :p

HE FRONTS suck. I have to set the water to molten hot + extra cycle + extra rinse to get clothes clean. Utterly obviates the purpose of HE.

120min wash cycles.

Drying takes like 24 mins, but don't give two shits about that.

edit: changed tops to FRONTS. Derp.

Bought the sammy front loaders from the sears sale about 4 years ago for ~800 total, probably be impossible to get the wife to use top loaders again and have never had anything close to a mold or smell problem.

Is it okay to place the washer/dryer(front loaders) on the basement floor (concrete), or should you build a low platform to place them on?
