Washed my MP3 in washer...now what?

I accidently left my Samsung YP-MT6Z (1GB) in my coat pocket. The coat was washed in cold water and Tide detergent. I think the total time in the washing machine was probably 30 minutes (maybe less). I managed to take it out before putting in the dryer, so it's wet, soapy, and slippery. Although my warranty is still good until January 2007, I'm not sure if Samsung would take it back (if it doesn't work). Probably is that water + soap + dirty stuff = bad for electronics.

Now, I'm letting the unit air dry. What should I do before it starts to corrode inside? The body is fine, and I tried to open the unit, but it's almost impossible without some manual. I was thinking of washing it in distilled water (just immerse the whole thing).

One more, the LCD is dry but there's a thin soapy residue on it. The only way to get rid of that is to open up the unit (which if done incorrectly, would void the warranty).

Whatever you do, don't try to turn it on. Wait at least 2-3 days and then try to turn it on. Most likely, it should be fine, but if you try to turn it on now, it will short out and you might break it.

Don't dry it in microwave oven. However, if you do be sure to have camera ready and post the pictures please.

Let it dry out, use a hairdryer, and let it sit for 2-3 days. PRetty good chance it will work after that.

I ran my samsung cell phone through the wash a couple months ago. 2 days later I tried to turn it on and it was fine. It was actually on when it went into the water, as i never turn my phone off.

yea boil the water then let it cool down. then put the mp3 player in it. after a few times it should be good. i don't know about two days but i would give it at LEAST 3 days to dry just to be safe. 2-3 days air dry, hairdryer it on medium or something. doing it at hot may damage it but i'm just guessing

Boiling water does only one thing to water--makes it hot. To obtain distilled water you buy it or make it. Making it entails boiling the water and condensing the steam.

mine(zen micro 5gb) went through the wash, and i let it dry 1.5 days (without any distilled water), and it didnt work. now its just a paper weight. :'(

It might be that your micro uses a micro hard drive, since my player is flash-based, it might have a better chance. I managed to wash all the soap residue and scum stuck from the unit and also the LCD is like new (no more residue). It's hanged dry right now. If it doesn't work, I'll give Samsung a call....

I think the case is glued together with some strong adhesive. Or it's using locking mechanism. Only the bottom was opened since two screws held it.

Excellent advice! Then let it dry for no less than 3 days and try to turn it on.

On a side note, as an uplifter of hope, my friend left his Nokia cell phone at the bottom of his pool for 2 days on accident (it was in his swim trunks, still on, when it fell out)

When he found it, he let it dry for 12 hours, turned it on and voila, it worked.
He has also dropped it out of a moving car (30+ MPH) twice and it still works to this day

Nokia phones are awesome for durability.

yea.....his has been missing the antenna for 2 years, yet it seems no matter where he goes, he has 5 bars (even at a national park where everyone else's phones got nothing)

i don't think you can give specific time frame on how long it will take to dry out. according to the op's profile, he is in seattle WA, and from what i have seen on the news and looking at the 10day forcasts, they have had rain for a long time, so the air is 100% humidity. this needs to be addressed because in phx AZ where i am it might take 3 day, but it might take the op 10 without some type of active drying.

I think it's been raining in Seattle for the past 27 consecutive days. It finally let up with a non-rainy day, but now it's windy and raining again tonight. I actually like Seattle a lot since it's pretty mild in the summer and winter. But lots lots of rain. My room is heated to 68F, but I'll let it hange for a five days or so.

The best thing is if you have an oldschool gas often. Gas ovens always have a small fuse on the bottom constantly burning, so it will always be luke warm in there. I'd submerged it in distilled water for a while, then leave it in the oven for a few days.
