WASD kb gaming

i hav a question thats been bugging me for a long time:
wen playing FPS games, wat fingers should be used for the WASD keys?
i hav always put my index finder on D, middle finger on W (or S), and ring finger on A.
i use my pinkie for CTRL and SHIFT (to crouch and run, for example)...

wats the 'right' way of doing it? i saw my frend using the standard typing position to activate those keys instead and its bugging me.

thanks!

I use the same layout as you, and would guess 99% of WASD users do the same.

Why does it matter how your friend does it? Just do what's comfortable to you.

I actually prefer ESDF, or one over to the right, from the standard WASD setup...but you should probably use your fingers the way you are doing it...

Indeed, I have a lot more options for mapping keys with this layout. More keys are within easy reach.

ESDF? hey nver heard of that b4 but it seems like it actually is a smarter way..
maybe i shuld giv that a shot... it ll be useful for strategy games and RPGs...
thxlot!..(now hafta remap all the keys for my games... *sigh*)

Middle finger is longer, so WASD is a more natural position. It's much easier to switch between W and S than between S and X.

Maybe Fenixgoon just has a short stubby middle finger.

My friend uses the arrow keys. I guess visually that makes sense, but then you don't have any other keys nearby that can be mapped to other commands.

I've always used WASD for movement, C for crouch, Z for prone, E for use and Shift for zoom in most shooters.

Whenever crouch is mapped to C, I remap it to LCtrl. If it's C, I have a hard time crouching and strafing right at the same time (both keys activated with index finger). Do you use your middle finger for the "D" key when crouched?

Yup, I always remap left ctrl to crouch instead of C also. Most shooters don't require that many keys to be mapped, so wasd s good. If you're playing somrthing like quake3 or ut where you want to bind every weapond, esdf makes a lot of sense.

I just thought about it and I use C for games where the crouch is a toggle. In games where you have to hold the key down to stay crouched, I use LCtrl or LShift depending on whether the game uses the alternate fire for zooming or whether I need a separate key.

Like BludeWeasel said, whatever is comfortable for you.

What works for me is:
Move forward: Left Mouse
Movement: ASD - strafe left/trafe right/backwards
Fire: right Mouse
Jump: W
Crouch: X usually
Weapon select: Mouse Wheel
Reload: R
Run: Shift
Use: E

I never could get used to using the mouse button for movement. What do you do in games where there is alternate fire?

Here's mine for a typical FPS:

WSAD = Forward/Back/Step Left/Step Right
Z,X = Lean Left/Right or Zoom In/Out
C = Prone
CTRL = Croutch
E = Use
Space = Jump
R = Reload
LMB = Fire
RMB = Alt. Fire
1,2, 3,4 = Favorite weapons
Q, F, G = Quick weapon switch or use

For alternate fire I use space bar.

Usually the keys I listed are my guarntee style. If no lean is in the game, then Q becomes my toss weapon, like in CS:S.

In the past I used this sort of noobish keys for Quake/FPSs

Forward: Right mouse button
Fire: Left mb
Alt. Fire: Middle mb
Strafe left: S
Strafe right: D
Backward: F

And so on... I even used a trackball for so long and was pretty good at it with FPSs, but I realized a mouse is more precise, especially going to a MX300. But I started using WSAD many years ago.

In TFC (my most comfortable setup) I use:
wasd - forward, back, strafe l, strafe r
mouse1 - fire
mouse2 - bhop
mouse3 - class specific (mainly, building SGs, selecting spy tranq/medikit and demoman peashooter)
wheel up - primary weapon for class
wheel dn - secondary weapon for class
mouse4 - zoom in (fov 70)
mouse5 - zoom out (fov 120 [my default])
r - gren1
f - gren2
q/e - class specific (SG rotation, r_drawviewmodel 1/0 for HW)
space - use
shift - reload
alt - duck
ctrl - voicecomms
keypad - spy disguising (KP / for friendly disguises, KP * for enemy disguises, number of KP key determines class disguised to, aka KP3 is soldier, etc)

Whatever works well for you. While it's on your mind it's a good time to try out other schemes. For me:

Numpad.
7,8,9 turn left, fwd, turn right.
4,5,6 strafe left, back, strafe right.
0 jump, + crouch
/,*,- etc good for other options

Of course I use the mouse leftie for this. I like the feel of it, and like having the whole alphabet freed up to bind as memnonics to other less rarely used commands. Big downside: Trying to game on someone else's rig. Especially if they haven't inverted the mouse.:Q Don't want to mess with their settings, so I'm bumbling around pretty badly.

Yeah, using the mousewheel up/down rotation as a single function rather than a selector works great for me. In the heat of battle it's just too difficult to accurately select something with the mousewheel.

In Quake for instance: mwheelup=lightning gun, mwheeldn=plasma, mouse3=rocket
