Was watching Ken Burns' doc on National Parks and thinking how much America has lost...

in terms of people in power who actually fight for real ideals instead of corporate interests. Particularly I was watching the segment set during the 30s and 40s, FDRs presidency. Some of the things that they were able to accomplish often against immense pressure from the private sector just couldn't even be tabled today. It really is sad to see how far right western politics has swung :(

OK.

I'll agree I'm idealizing and simplifying things here more than a bit but I stand behind what I say.
What is wrong with serving corporate interests? They help enrich the country.

No they help enrich the corporations. I'm not arguing for a society without capitalism. Indeed capitalism makes the world go round. I'm arguing that capitalism enriches the capitalists and because of that it's not the right tool for every job. Health care, education, welfare, many other social services are better handled under the government.

*sigh*

Just because you despise corporations doing their corporaty things, doesn't necessarily mean the government can or will do a better job

That, and I was thinking what a crappy filmmaker Ken Burns is. Zooming on an old photo, pulling back from an old photo, panning left on an old photo-boring. I should have been a documentary filmmaker, people actually think this guy is good.

Agreed; he should have used a time machine and gone back to film those historic scenes in HD.

You make an excellent point. One guy that really impressed me in last night's episode was FDR's Secretary of the Interior, Harold Ickes. Formerly a diehard Republican, he became an enthusiastic New Dealer. He was a leading figure in fighting the Forestry Service and others to do such things as declare (and expand) Olympia Park.

Mostly when I watch that show, and its near constant repetition of the concept that the parks represent what is best in the American spirit, all I can think of is if the parks were proposed now the Know Nothing wing of the GOP would go hysterical labeling it socialism and theft of private property.

hehe. He's a celebrated Documentarian for his subject matter and the handling of those subjects, not because he's an awesome Camera Person. I've only watched 1 or 2 of his documentaries, but they've been good.

The docs on Civil War, Brooklyn bridge, Coney Island were awesome. I looked forward to the parks doc but it was kinda downhill after the first episode. There's too much of that maudlin Hallmark Card emo vibe going on. It's also cartoonish in the intentional political slant.
