WAS UP with the MSI K7N415 Pro (nForce 415)????

Newegg is selling the MSI K7N415 Pro nForce board; their "splash ad" says that there is "no vga" (which I expected because that is the basic exclusion on the 415 vs. the 420) and it say's that the board is ONLY WINDOWS XP compatible. However, it terms of the VGA issue, when you click on the photos, one shot shows what looks like a mobo-to-bracket adapter for vga, as well as one that looks like a small add-on expansion card (attached to bracket) with audio jacks and a third adapter which looks like a SPDIF connector on a bracket.

Newegg has a "detailed specifications" link that gives a lot of information including info on the integrated video. (????) I thought the 415 doesn't have integrated video??? And it mentions about 6 channel sound and SPDIF out but NOT anything SPECIFICALLY about the
"D" versions Dolby Digital support.

I went to MSI's USA and Taiwan page and can only find information of the MSI K7N420 Pro which is also available at newegg for about $20 more.

Also, what have people experiences with the Asus A7N266-C (that's NOT a typo, "C" NOT "E") been like. This model has the "D" version of the nForce 415 chipset??? Or what have you encountered with the Asus A7N266-E????

The pics of the "C" Asus look nice... layout looks clean, nice bundle, etc....

My TWO biggest concerns with the MSI K7N415 Pro are:

1) Does it use the "D" version of the nForce 415 chipset????

2) Is it REALLY ONLY Windows XP compatible?????

Any helpful input you can give me would be greatly appreciated....

Thanks😕

I'm doing just great with my MSI K7N420 Pro system. Can't complain.

I would assume the MSI K7N415 isn't any different, but of course I haven't researched it enough.

IMO, I think the ASUS A7N266-C (nForce 415-D, includes nForce sound, unless there's a "WOA" at the end) is the way to go. There have been a lot of rave reviews about the ASUS A7N266-E (nForce 420-D), and the ASUS A7N266-C is supposedly the exact same thing, save the integrated GeF2MX video.

Johan from Aceshardware was able to overclock the A7N266-E to 165MHz FSB "without a hitch", and that's with the PCI bus locked at 33MHz (a nifty ASUS feature). Plus you get thermal protection, ala P4-like (to compare to Tom's famous article).

:Q No, it doesn't sound right to be "Windows XP" only!!! But go to "the Egg" and click on Mobos-AMD-nforce 415 and you will see it; unless it gets changed overnight.

I wonder if they mean AMD Athlon XP Only????

nVidia prefers to support XP for the nforce, but 2000 will work fine. There are win9x/ME drivers, but these are not recommended OS'es.

I'm running an Athlon Thunderboard in my K7N420 Pro and it works perfectly. I use a Duron 1.2gig in budget systems I sell and the board works fine with these too, so I doubt they mean Athlon XP only.

The images depict the following:

image 01: the motherboard (ATX I/O view) - note missing com port in I/O area where VGA connector (also missing) would be.
image 02: another view of the motherboard
image 03: Motherboard manual, driver cd, IDE cable, floppy cable
image 04: COM port affixed to backing plate, Custom ATX I/O connector shield (note hole for network jack, no hole for extra COM port or VGA out) cable for connecting SP/DIF connector to CNR riser, CNR riser card (don't install if using SP/DIF speakers), SP/DIF output affixed to backing plate (use this if using SP/DIF speakers otherwise use CNR riser)
Image 05: case box

What they have not given you judging by the pictures is:
1: a backing plate with D-LED diagnostics and 2 extra USB ports image (bottom right)
2: a backing plate with a further 2 USB ports image (bottom left)

These items come standard with the K7N420 Pro.

I have two nForce boards from Asus. One is the A7N266-E (with built-in everything, VGA, DD sound, LAN) and the A7n266-C (no VGA, no LAN but with the awesome DD 5.1 sound). The latter is slightly faster but both are high quality, extremely stable boards. I'm now at 150fsb both, no voltage tweaks and on regular Crucial PC2100. I haven't pushed it beyond that yet but everything is so stable I'm satisfied for now. Also, they have three year warranties so that takes care of my piece of mind. These are my first Asus mobos ever and so far, I'm impressed.
