I don't get the hype - seriously. I saw the film on a IMAX, consider myself a mild fan of the original series, and went to see the new film with an open mind and no expectations. I liked the first third of the film and the actor who played Kirk, but was dissapointed by the rest. Spent most of the time texting my GF. I can appreciate good CGI like the next guy, but for crissakes (will try to avoid spoliers):
(1) Time-Travel plot has has been worn thin in too many other movies.
(2) Chekov/Scottie were frikken annoying - their dialect is funny for the first ten seconds, then the shtick got old fast.
(3) 'New' Spock needed Prozac.
(4) Entire sequence leading up to Kirk meeting 'Old Spock' was so cheezy it made 'Lost in Space' look like 'Space Odyssey'. I thought Hollywood writers were no longer on strike?
(5) Some Interior shots of Enterprise look suspiciously like they were filmed in a sewage treatment plant.
(6) My theater was sold out, audience looked bored for most of the film, but then applauded (except for me) at the end as if they were expected to. not because they wanted to.
Glad some of you liked it, but I'll take my booms and explosions in the form of 'Transformers' or 'Terminator'. One Star Trek IV was enough.
