Was supposed to get my new car today

I had been researching and doing my homework on a 2008 Ford Fusion SEL V6 for the last 3 months and was finally ready to buy one. I went into the dealer and they found one with the options and equipment that I wanted and said that they could get it here the next day. I put a $500 deposit on the car on Wednesday night and they said maybe thursday but definitely on Friday they would have it in. I was happy with that.

They called me yesterday afternoon and said that they had a problem getting in touch with the dealer who has the car and that they wouldnt be able to get it until today (Friday). I said OK because I realized it was kind of a longshot to get it that day. Fast forward to today, I get a call from their New Car manager and he says that the dealer who has this car is now saying its not available and won't sell it to them and they can't get the one I had picked out and agreed tobuy. Now they are saying that I have to pick from different colors or 1 with the right color and different options. I guess my needs for a car are too specific but I dont care, I found the one that I wanted and they said they could get it no problem from Wensday afternoon on... and now they are saying that they cant get it.

The car I'm looking for was an 08 Fusion SEL V6 Dark Ink Blue with Sirius Sat Radio, Moon/Tune package, and it had to have the new Microsoft Sync system included (all 08 SEL's had this standard after an October build date). My wife does not want a car with leather seats and we dont care for a rear spoiler. The one that they had found happened to have the reverse sensing system which was OK. Well now they cant get it.

All they can get is a blue one with the same options but without the reverse sensing and with a spoiler. They can also get the same as the one I wanted in Vapor Silver, Redfire, Light Sage, or White Suede.

Of course now we are looking at not getting the car until after the weekend... Monday at the earliest. What should I do... I don't really care for any of the colors they are giving me and I don't care for the spoiler on that car either. If I take one of these should I try to get anything out of them for the inconvenience or is it not even worth it and I should just walk?

Get your deposit back and wait until you find the car you want.

It sounds like you are in WAY too much of a hurry. Take your time. You will have the car for years, don't rush into buying it. Dealers can smell that kind of "desperation".

If I was you I would...

1. Get my deposit back.
2. Tell the dealer that when they get the car you want to give you a call (leave them your card)
3. Walk away and take your wife out to a nice dinner.
4. Be patient and wait for a couple of weeks. They will call you.
5. While waiting see if you can search online for the car you want at other dealers in your state, or see if Ford has a feature on their web site for locating cars.

Be patient. I cannot stress this enough. Take the time and get what YOU want. Don't settle for anything less.

^Yep, is there anyway to get a deposit back since they were not able to uphold their end of the deal?

Dude, you're buying a new car, might as well not settle for anything but the best for yourself. You're not shopping for some used car where you get all the options already decided by someone else. Be firm.

Yes I am sure that I am going to be able to get my deposit back as I have not signed anything and wrote a check for $500 to them. The receipt that they gave me states plainly that after the check clears they will issue a deposit without any trouble.

I agree that I really should not accept what ever they are giving me and only accept the car that I specifically want. I was hoping to get something before the thanksgiving holidays because we have some in-state traveling to do and would be much much more comfortable in this rather than my old car which is a 94 chrysler lebaron convertible... but none-the-less its not worth settling for. We are going to go in there tonight and see what they have to say... look at the specific colors and the spoiler on a car and see what we think and if we are not completely satisfied like we were before when we thought we were getting the car... then we will walk away and do as you said to wait for them to call.

A car is usually a long term purchase and if new you should get exactly what you want - it is your money. If this dealer can't/won't provide you with exactly what you want then go elsewhere. You should be driving something you are happy with not something a dealer thinks you should have. There are online sites that will let you enter the exact options you want and then contact area dealers to get your car for you. DON'T SETTLE - get what you want!

Thats a lie, they either waited/procrastinated till the other dealer was closed, or they weren't willing to trade they way the other dealer wanted.

Take your business elsewhere, or contact that other dealer directly.

Keep this in mind...

Dealers LOSE money the longer a car is sitting on their lot. Every car you see on a dealers lot is an interest payment they have to make to the bank as long as it remains unsold. That is why all of the ads you see say "must take delivery from dealer stock".

Many dealers will jerk you around when it comes to ordering a car or trading with another dealer, hoping that you will settle for what they have in stock. Especially if the stock they have is more than 30-90 days old.

Finally...

Dealers are the most motivated to sell at the end of the month. It's too early in November for them to be willing to work for your sale. So the longer you hold out the better your odds of getting the car you want at the price you want.

ford's online dealer inventory search is pretty good, try using it to find the dealer?

Probably the other dealer either didn't have it available, or wouldn't do the trade. It happens like that a lot, believe me.

You know what you want, don't settle for anything else. Of course they're going to offer you alternatives....that's perfectly okay with lots of people. What does anyone expect them to say..."sorry, we can't get that one for you, see you later", and not offer a close alternative? It's stupid to think anyone would do otherwise.

If the alternatives are not okay with you, just get your deposit back until they get the car you want. Be firm, but polite. They might work you a bit, but in the end, you'll get the car you want or you'll get a hell of a deal on one of the others.
Either way, you win.

I've been using the Mazda online dealer inventory to locate my new car and it's been spot on.

I've been through the dealer search thing hundreds of times trying to locate the cars that im looking for, however the problem is that they are all like way way far away. I got him to tell me where they are and I'm in Columbus, OH and the only dealers they claim that have the car we want is in Michigan and Pennsylvania. Needless to say its a long ways away.

I'm also considering the Mercury Milan version of the same car basically but its tough to find something as well. If only I could convince my wife that leather seats are OK!

If you want to make your wife REALLY happy, get heated seats. It's amazing how nice they are and how much women (who get colder than us guys) love them once they have a chance to use them.

The problem is that she doesn't want to have leather seats because it is "mean to the animals who are used to make nice seats in cars" and she doesn't like that. Plus, she says she doesn't like them in the summer time and stuff like that. But the heated seats is almost enough to push her over the top so perhaps I can win her over with that....

Its just almost impossible to find a car without leather seats with the equipment that I want on it and in the series of car I am looking for.

You should point out that leather comes from cows who are being slaughtered for their meat anyway. Unlike fur, leather demand does not affect how many animals are being killed...they're dead either way.

Is the spoiler removable at all? Like, take out four bolts, fill in the holes, and it's the same car? If you have to go that route, make the dealer do the work, and don't let 'em charge you extra.

Or you could just take a Sawzall and do it yourself😛

Does she eat beef?

No she doesn't eat beef either, I know I know it doesn't make much sense but in a long series of comprimises this is one I have to let go it seems. Unless of course I can find that they use some sort of artificial pseudo leather in cars...

In any event, I went in there and they told me that the car that they were going to get for me has been sold and supposedly one manager at the selling dealer told them one thing and another sold the car. In any event they said that they could get the one with the spoiler or they could get the ones with the different colors. My wife came back and said she'd take the one with the spoiler if they took off the $300 for the price of the option and they said they couldnt do it so we are going to get our deposit back once it goes through our bank or their bank as its already been deposited.

I decided that even if we do take the one with the spoiler, there is no point in letting them think we are going to keep it over the weekend as they wont be doing anything until Monday to get it.

That's what you do. Walk out. When my mom bought her rice-a-roni, she had a check for a max of 16k from her bank, but the dealer wanted in-house financing. My dad threatened to walk and they caved.
