Was never a fan of The Doors as a wee lad when my father played it

There are things I like about the Doors...I like their grooves, as mentioned above, specifically; I just mostly don't like Morrison so much. He's an effing boar. His voice is fine, I just think he's not interesting otherwise.

Some of their stuff has good bits...but overall, I've never really been a fan.

'When The Music's Over' caps all of the others.

'The End' is fine, but I'm planning on editing out the dialog portion.

Then there's 'Break On Through' and 'L'America', 'The Alabama Song', 'Hyacinth House' .....

I love some of their stuff, but not really a favorite of mine. I think in a discussion of 60's music and culture you would want to talk about their influence. The musicians were great. Interestingly they didn't have a bass player.

Not real crazy about Jim Morrison. He was the perfect front man for the group but got too far out there (exposing himself onstage etc). He wrote some great lyrics but I think he is overrated as a 'poet'.

Make sure you listen to this....while Jim Morrison gets all the credit, Ray Manzarek was the defining baseline.

You should listen to this recording from 1998 as Ray talks about the doors, writing Light My Fire, and some stuff to demystify the band. Ray is very fun to listen to....great story teller. I've shared this link to quite a few friends over the years just because it's such a great interview.

It was a very fertile time for popular music. The Doors first album burst upon radio in Los Angeles, the first song they played was Break On Through, the first song on the first album... it is a great song. Then Light My Fire caught on bigtime. The whole first album and most everything on the first 3-4 albums was more than worth listening to. Their live performances were inconsistent. Ray Mansurek mused later that they could be really good, also could be quite bad.

Morrison was quite the artist, but lost his mojo considerably later on. That doesn't diminish what he did earlier. I'm not going to turn up my nose on him because of what happened in Florida.

I'm sure I've heard their music since they stayed popular even w/o JM. Although what I mean there are tunes created before his death.

One interesting diff is that Ray Manzarek was on KBs for the debut platter and one more. Died in 2013. I thought he was pretty awesome. That frazzled sounding 60s is such a unique addition to a fairly unique band.

Confusing post, not sure what you are trying to say. And Manzarek played KB's on all the Doors albums, not just two.

Ok. I was actually talking about the 80's 90's punkish band "X" first album was Los Angles and RM was on that antd the next.'

I loved the way he played. His rig had frazzled junk box (?) sound and the muddfoker could jam.

edit: only first 2 albuns Los Angeles and Wild Gift are any good. But OMG, I think that band ran mainly on crank, no band has ever used it to wider and greater effect than anyone else except maybe x-ray spex

One of the best shows I've seen was a one-man performance by Manzarek in a tiny room about 20 years ago. He was excellent both musically and as a person.

Growing up in the LA/Venice Beach area I have to be a Doors fan, right?

Got their entire collection but not surprising since I grew up listening to them. But I’d still take Steely Dan over The Doors for my “one and only” band.

Who cares what you are a fan of or not? As long as you are the one choosing, who cares what others think?

Except if you are a fan of Nickelback then I'll look at you with distain.

I broadcast a ~ 1 hour special on June 30, 2021on Jim Morrison on my KALX, Berkeley radio show, called "Just Jim," created by Kathleen Murphy, from Seattle.

If there's interest here I could put it up on Wetransfer as an 87kb MP3, available for download for a week.

I was not clear? The special I aired was created by her, but I AM not her. She supplied me with the material, I assembled what I aired but it was practically everything she supplied. I edited out a couple swear words, that's all.

The Doors are still a big deal. I was a bit surprised to discover that a few years ago.
