Tarintinos? best film yet.
He is to film what Picasso is to canvas.
Imagine a room full of films from all different genres and ages, 60?s 70?s 80?s 90?s etc?
And they get randomly re-spliced back together., so that in the resulting film, while you watch it, you are traveling through many different dimensions.
Additionally, they are dimensions you know, but with a twist.
You will see a familiar story, maybe even a clichéd story, but it twisted. Sometimes this twist is an essential point he is making. Other times, it is just a game or inside joke. Inside to people who have seen the films he is paying homage too. If you never saw Bruce Lee?s ;last film, you would not know why Uma is wearing a Yellow suit.
If you never saw Pulp Fiction, you won?t get the reference to the scene about coffee and ?Dead N!gger storage.?
Lets hope with some artistic License the Mods let me post this scene from Pulp Fiction.
[Jules, Vincent and Jimmie are drinking coffee in Jimmie's kitchen]
Jules Winnfield: Mmmm! This is some serious gourmet sh!t! Usually, me and Vince would be happy with some freeze-dried Taster's Choice, but he springs this serious GOURMET sh!t on us! What flavor is this?
Jimmie Dimmick: Knock it off, Julie.
Jules Winnfield: [pause] What?
Jimmie Dimmick: I don't need you to tell me how fvcking good my coffee is, alright? I'm the one who buys it. I know how good it is. When Bonnie goes out shopping she buys SH!T. Me, I buy the expensive gourmet coffee because when I drink it I like to taste it. But you know what's on my mind right now? It AIN'T the expensive coffee in my kitchen, it's the dead n!gger you have laying in my garage.
Jules Winnfield: Jimmie, let me explain...
Jimmie Dimmick: No, let me ask you a question. When you came barrelling in here did you see a sign out front of my house that said Dead N!gger Storage?
Jules Winnfield: Jimmie...
Jimmie Dimmick: Answer the question! Did you see a sign out front that said Dead N!gger Storage?
Jules Winnfield: [pause] No.
Jimmie Dimmick: And you know WHY you didn't see it?
Jules Winnfield: Why?
Jimmie Dimmick: 'Cause it ain't there, 'cause storing dead n!ggers ain't my fvcking business, that's why!
Lets take just 3 things from that scene:
1. Tarintino plays Jimmie ?obviously, but I will spell it out: when you paint a picture of yourself it is called a self-portrait. When you include yourself in a film, it is a self-portrait.
2. The contrast between violence, and coffee ? it is Tarintino?s trade mark version of comic relief.
3. Dead black person in the house.
In Kill Bill you all so see these elements in the scene when Uma is fighting Vivica Fox:
1. The self portrait is not of Tarantino, but of a Tarantino film, Uma make a square with her hand while talking to Vivica. That is a reference to Pulp Fiction.
2. The fighting stops for a cup of coffee.
3. Scene ends with a dead black person in the house.
