"Almost think" that the nukes were a good thing? In ending a war which would've surely been much bloodier if a land invasion of Japan was required, the nukes were indeed a good thing. Many more American and Japanese veterans and civilians lived to see the peace who otherwise would've died in a more-extended war.

It is likely they were responsible fror more deaths than the Nazis, they just wern't into documnetation like the Germans were.

Sadly, very true, especially regarding POW treatment. As compared to the Germans, who had ~3% fatality rate for POWs under their control, the rate for POWs under Japanese control was 10x higher (~33%), and the extent of the depravation and malnutrion was so severe that almost half the survivors were not alive within five years of liberation.

This does not shock me one little bit. Shocked as some of you might be, this IS part of human nature. Although we try to control it by will, or just "civilization", it is still there. And to say that this is disgusting and shocking(just because it's an isolated event and relatively close to our timeline) and all the previous wars fought throughout human history aren't(because that is all in the past, right), is hypocrisy as well.

I remember a time when we would treat the civilized society who allows such actions the same as the people committing them. We nuked two of their cities and gutted many more with napalm, killing hundreds of thousands of civilians and bringing ruin to their country.

Result is 60 years of peace and prosperity, and no more brutality from the Japanese.

Everytime someone asks how normal people could do this I'm always reminded of the Milgram experiment and the Standford prison experiment. People are sick and most anyone under the same circumstances would have done the exact same thing. You may think you're above that but you aren't.

I can't think of any other examples of people running a killing competition and publishing running total in newspaper, like they did in Nanking.
