"Almost think" that the nukes were a good thing? In ending a war which would've surely been much bloodier if a land invasion of Japan was required, the nukes were indeed a good thing. Many more American and Japanese veterans and civilians lived to see the peace who otherwise would've died in a more-extended war.

The Rape of Nanking barely scratches the surface of Imperial Japan's brutality.

The Burma-Thiland Railroad, Battan Death March, Unit 731, Famine, comfort women, murder and torture of millions of under their occupation, pow treatment, war conduct, etc...

It is likely they were responsible fror more deaths than the Nazis, they just wern't into documnetation like the Germans were.

Sadly, very true, especially regarding POW treatment. As compared to the Germans, who had ~3% fatality rate for POWs under their control, the rate for POWs under Japanese control was 10x higher (~33%), and the extent of the depravation and malnutrion was so severe that almost half the survivors were not alive within five years of liberation.

The japanese people look at chinese people like they are dogs. Even to this date, the PM goes to worship the WW2 soldiers like they were heroes.

Yasukuni Shrine is a shrine dedicated to the war dead of Japan and was around long before WWII.

Except they should have removed the convicted war criminals that are also "housed" there. That is the real controversy.

The Japanese claims the 1,034 convicted war criminals they worship at the shrine there were wrongly convicted by the Westerners. What's next? Germans are going to claim they were wrongly convicted in the Nuremberg Trials? How absurb

Excellent read.

This does not shock me one little bit. Shocked as some of you might be, this IS part of human nature. Although we try to control it by will, or just "civilization", it is still there. And to say that this is disgusting and shocking(just because it's an isolated event and relatively close to our timeline) and all the previous wars fought throughout human history aren't(because that is all in the past, right), is hypocrisy as well.

I remember a time when we would treat the civilized society who allows such actions the same as the people committing them. We nuked two of their cities and gutted many more with napalm, killing hundreds of thousands of civilians and bringing ruin to their country.

Result is 60 years of peace and prosperity, and no more brutality from the Japanese.

Hahahahahahahahhaa, so explain the military expenditure if they do not have an army. For crying out loud, they got AEGIS!!!

I don't think that Japan has the weapons and the army to go against China anymore. China has evolve and modernized beyond everyones expectations.

Almost anything sexual in history is banned from public schools in Florida.

Look what's going on in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Beheadings? Killing innocent people?

Terrible.

what makes the nanking massacre unique is that you'd never imagine that coming from a japnese culture that is highly evolved in terms of philosophy, society, values, customs etc. It's hard to comprehend that such depravity existed in such a people.

ugh no. that line works for germany, not japan. japan was never a free liberal democracy. japans history is one of rather barberous and strict social controls with a caste system that totally limited freedom. just remember they basically killed all their christians.

little known history...there were jews sheltered in japan in ww2
http://www.jcpa.org/jl/jl425.htm

also an unofficial offer of homeland for them in china. course it fell through once the military took power.

Japan as a society and culture is responsible for this, it was a deliberate and calculated act, not some kind of instinctive behavior. It's true that other cultures have commited atrocities, but that's because there have been other cultures based on similar diabolical ideas.

Agreed.

Everytime someone asks how normal people could do this I'm always reminded of the Milgram experiment and the Standford prison experiment. People are sick and most anyone under the same circumstances would have done the exact same thing. You may think you're above that but you aren't.

It doesn't make it any less disgusting, however.

Can you please retype that sentence so it makes sense?

I can't think of any other examples of people running a killing competition and publishing running total in newspaper, like they did in Nanking.
