Was in a multiple car accident. Not my fault, not hurt, but I'm a learner.

I keep quite a few car lengths in front of me so that I can stop smoothly even if the guy in front of me slamms on his brakes. This also ensures the guy behind me stops in time. Often, the car lengths means I can just take my foot off the gas and not even have to apply the brakes when there is some kind of slowdown in front of me. In the end I get where I'm going sooner and with no stress. Try it sometime. BTW, I travel at the speed of traffic and am not one of those people going below or at a low speed limit. You can zoom along and keep distance. It's simply a driving technique most noobs behind the wheel haven't thought about. I guess my amateur physics obsession has made me think about driving differently in recent years.

This.

Not only is it less stressful, you use your brakes less, which means less pad wear, and also better fuel efficiency (since after braking, you need to accelerate back to speed, which uses fuel).

If you see a problem up ahead, or you are coming to a red light, you should coast.

I conclude that killster1 is either a troll or just a goddamned idiot. And seriously, no good driver operates an automatic with 2 feet. If you really need the extra 0.5 seconds reaction time to depress the brake pedal and avoid a rear-end collision, then you need to quit tailgating.

thnx rainbow chaser! your vote of expert makes me feel great! go eat some olive oil soaked bread! Everyone tailgates like others say if you dont then people will cut you off and cause a accident or even closer call, also it saves gas! Mythbusters says tailgating 18wheelers actually gives you 18% better gas milage =P tho ive seen stupid tires blow on those things and really jack stuff up so not the best idea

Unfortunately I and everyone else was still charged with a ticket for "following too closely"
If it teaches you to keep further back from the car in front of you, I'd say it's very fortunate, not unfortunate at all. Most drivers tailgate severely and don't even realize they're doing it. I have no idea why, the only thing that occurs to me is catching a draft and improving milage, but I doubt most people would even think of that.
