Was given a Dell W1700 - not working tho

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Went and did a simple job today. Was going out to see why this ladies monitor wouldnt power up. Couldnt figure out why. Power supply was green, when plugged into the monitor the power light would come on, but nothing out of the screen. I hooked it up to my laptop when I was there, using VGA, and nothing appreared on the scree, even when a monitor isnt hooked up, but on, there is always letters or something on the screen, still no go. Is there anything I can do to fix this, get this fixed or send back to Dell and pay them something to have it fixed? She gave it to me because she had already bought another one. Please tell me there is hope here, its the Dell W1700, the widescreen LCD tv all in one thing, and would be hella nice to have if it worked right.

Let me say it was bought in January of last year she said, and apparently she thinks it has a 1 year warranty on it, but is she wrong?

Either way, January of last year + 1 year = January of this year, and you're OOW.

I'm thinking a loose internal connection. If you're feeling ballsy, open it up and check. First though, try connecting other inputs - composite, svideo, coax.

tried coaxial, nothing, now heres something else

I connected it just now, VGA to a 6800gt, with cloned display, with my other monitor on DVI. When I go into the display settings under the desktop, and go to displays under nvidias settings, it picks up the W1700, is this good?

If the computer detects the LCD but the LCD doesnt display anything even when not connected to any device then the backlight may have burned out. When the monitor has no siginal it should say check connections on the screen. Something you may want to look into.

You can bulid your own projector with the LCD if you scrap the parts. My friend built his own projector but he used an old PS1 LCD.

I have heard of back lights being replaced before, but I cannot tell you much about it. My advice is go out and get a crt, forget about making a fashion statement with your PC; Thin monitors blow, CRT's rule when It comes to clairty, resolution, and colour. People who love LCD's are people who also like interior decorating and think celerons are high performace computer brains.

Im sure ur going to get flammed out the a$$ on that, however, I have a Hyunda L90D+ 8ms 19" LCD, and sir, I am in love with it. I was a die hard CRT man too...made the switch because of the price, and never will go back!

Oh; did I forget to mention, that CRT's do not have the latency issue that LCD's have? 8ms? Ha, thats joke! My CRT can do better than that. Most 8ms panels are really like 15-25ms, so don't go listening to all that marketing hype. Go OLED when it comes out, just as long as you dont mind the interpolation that All flat displays have. The Swiss army knife like resolution and latency free abilty of any CRT is reason enough choose the tube.

CRT advantages:
[*] Resolution- You wont need the latest $500+ graphics card to view it natively. Any resolution you choose is native to a CRT. Even plasma cant really win this one.
[*] Colour- As close to real as it will ever get.
[*] Clairty
[*] Latency-No need to worry about motion blur or responce time.
[*] Cost- Superior picture qualty at a fraction of a cost.
[*] Excellant 180° viewing angles
[*] No backlighting needed- LCD back lights loose their brightness over time and get dim, making it hard to see what is on the screen.
[*] Last, It's a time tested proven technology- Most screens will last 10+ years.

LCD Advanteges-
[*] Size
[*] Weight- Unless you travel alot (IE Military) and dont stay in one city very long LCD is ideal.
[*] Power
The only place that I can really think of where an LCD would be desirable is people who live on boats*. All of the LCD advantages I listed are things that boat owners take in to serious consideration when choosing appliences for their vessel (TV's, Refregerators, Ovens/Stoves, Lights, Radio, GPS). Ok, RV's too.

*In Florida, a lot of people choose their boat as their permanent residence. Plenty of marina's are set up to accomodate such guests. (Plus all the boats have basements :) )

You forgot one of LCD's biggest Pros... Heat. an LCD generates way less heat then a CRT. I can turn off my CRT and the temp in my room drops almost instantly.

OP, I would ignore that thread crapper. It does sound to me like the backlight is dead, but I don't know how you could replace it. Good luck.

Yes, I did. I felt power covered that well. If a device is low power then it is low heat as well. If you can turn off your monitor and feel the room temperature drop like you said, then you may want to consider moving it to another room bigger than your closet. It sounds a bit far fetched to me.

No, sell it on ebay. If it does not sell on the first try keep on trying. Some one out there would love to use it for a home made projector project.
