I have retained possession of a Dell Poweredge 1600SC server.

It's got 2 SCSI drives in raid, MAP3367NC (36GB, 10,000 RPM's). There are 2 partitions. I can't find a RAID Configuration screen to access while it's booting, so I don't know what configuration it's in.

My problem is that I need to save the data off one partition before wiping the drives, but the OS (Windows Server 2000) on the other partition is seemingly FUBARED. I don't have a copy of Server 2K to try to repair it either. It'll boot, let you sign on, and then load up, but the cursor never appears and even when using the keyboard to get around it just freezes up almost immediately.

Can I just pull one of the drives out, pop it in another PC, and access the data like that? Will it be whole or would I need to hook up both drives to get it, and will that work?

u got the service tag.. its probably a perc card... hit control a when it boots.. right about bios...

can you pull out drive ? yes, depends on what raid your using.. 2 drive is probably mirror unless it's raid 0..

It's an LSI card. I did run the service tag and saw the original specs as well, but that didn't help much. I did notice a couple components in the server that are not on the list.

I had already hit control+a and gone to the LSI configuration, but it doesn't say "RAID 0" or "RAID 1" or anything. It can't hurt if I pop it out, try it in another rig and then put it back if needed.

What you have there is probably the onboard scsi connected to both drive.
hmmm, let see, try booting up to safe mode with network, and copy the files you need to another computer. If else fails, you can install the drive on other computer with scsi controller and copy the files that way.

Thanks. You are right, it is onboard.

However, there was also a tape drive connected to an Adaptec 39160 controller card.

I took the card out and put it on my Asus A8V. The computer detects the card, installs drivers, but then says the card won't start. I tried different drivers, looked in the bios for somewhere to enable scsi, and searched a bit on the web but it was time for bed at that point.

When I get home tonight, I will try to boot to safe mode on the server and try to grab the files that way.
