Was George Washinton a "damn poor leader"?

Who was more of a traitor to the Revolutionary cause?

  • Charles Lee

  • George Washington

I think he was, both as President and Commander in Chief of the Continental Army.

Why don't more people think that what he did to Charles Lee makes him an ass and in fact makes his "own dumb self" the traitor rather than Charles Lee?

To me, it seems like he wanted control over the people rather than quick victory.

About the poll: By "the Revolutionary cause", I mean liberty, not Marxism.

ummm, what are you talking about? Washington made Lee Attorney General. i don't see how that is a bad thing.

edit: so it might be nice to see some documentation as to what you are talking about. such as battle reports and handling of national decisions.

While I think you can fault Washington for his military tactics, his leadership and character are impeccable. I'm really not sure how you can doubt this considering he had every opportunity to be dictator of the United States.

from a crappy, uncited, wiki article:

When he arrived in New York to join General Washington and the main part of the Continental Army, Washington chose to show his appreciation of General Lee (who was a very popular general officer among not only the army, but Congress) by changing the name of Fort Constitution, which was located on the New Jersey side of the Hudson opposite Fort Washington, to Fort Lee.

Toward the end of 1776, Lee's animosity for Washington began to show. During the retreat from Forts Washington and Lee, he dawdled with his army, and intensified a letter campaign to convince various Congress members that he should replace Washington as Commander-in-Chief. Around this time, Washington was accidentally given and opened a letter from Lee to a Colonel Reed, in which Lee condemned Washington's leadership and abilities, and blamed Washington entirely for the dire straits of the Army. Though he was the victim of the letter, Washington was not angry. He was suspicious and disappointed at both Lee and himself, Washington being inclined to take much responsibility and little credit for himself.[citation needed] He sent the letters to Reed and wrote an accompanying letter apologizing for the mistake.

sounds like Lee was the ass.

The biggest credit I give Washington was already stated in this thread. He had every opportunity afforded to him to become the first great Dictator and he didn't. Honestly people were offering him the position on a golden platter.

For all his downfalls, this alone is incredibly respectable.

I like how he uses "quotes." It's almost like he understands citations but at the same time doesn't. But I must congratulate the OP on bringing Nemesis1 back out of the woodwork.
