I think he was. He was a big spender, he raised taxes several times, he crushed the Whiskey Rebellion and invoked a national draft to do so, he created the first central bank, and he simply increased the power of the Federal Government immensely.

To his credit, he had an excellent farewell address and deferred to Congress on everything, but that doesn't quite save him, IMO. I kind of wonder if he was a British Agent.

The whole cherry tree thing just ruined it for me. I don't even care if the story is a hoax. He's a traitor in my eyes.

He was an 18th century international drug dealer who grew and peddled Hemp and distilled Intoxicating Liquors. Even going so far as giving beer to CHILDREN!!!

According to The Huffington Post he might even have been a i love you.

Wouldn't the first president increase federal power immensely merely by performing his necessary Constitutional duties?

First of all George Washington is a General. He could have been King of the USA, but he refused. This is what made him one of the greatest presidents ever. Not only did he defend the country with his life and eventually defeated the British, but he refused to be King and humbly accepted the position of President.

You might also note that, once in office, Mr. Washington could easily have been "President for Life" yet chose to leave to set a precedent for peaceful transfer of power in the United States.

he didn't defeat the British. as a General most have said he got lucky.

the best and most influential thing he did (wich makes him so popular..well besides being the first) is he stepped down. he could have been king but did what he thought best for the US.

What makes JFK such a great president is the fact that the plot to take him out actually worked!

I voted yes.

A President who dared to fight the British Empire, the most murderous and bloodthirsty organization this planet has ever witnessed, can't be the worst.

Even worse than Bush/Cheney?!??

Of course! The British Empire slaughtered hundreds of millions to billions of people.

But Bush/Cheney cooperated with the pathetic remnants of the British Empire. Any President who cooperates with such monsters can't even be compared to a President who fought them.

My money is on this being his school's homework. I remember my U.S. History class many years ago was just non-stop "debate topics" like this.

Whoever teaches that class doesn't seem to be doing a very good job of making him learn shit.
