Was at a bar last night...

I was at a bar last night bill came to $87.00 I paid with my CC I signed for it with 87 and no tip, because I had left cash tips as I was getting the drinks. I looked over and saw the bar tenders talking to eachother and pointing to me. I walked over and said that I was leaving cash tips and they shrugged me off...

fast forward to this morning I check my account and i have a charge for 113.00 I left a msg at the bar explaining my situation.

What can I do in this situation?

That's straight theft.....

that wiki article does have a point.....it might automatically add a certain percent....though it would have to be a 30% tip to get it from 87 to 113.....

The $113 may just be an authoirzation, and they are really just going to charge the $87. They do this at almost all resturants and gas stations.

Wow, thats a lot of cajones... I hate this tipping sh!t and I don't want to start a flame war.

If you wrote 0 in tip and 87 in the total then thats what it will end up, but I would keep the receipt anyways.

What they did was a federal offense.

The manager will bend over backwards to kiss your behind. And i would bet that job loses are in order, too.

I doubt that they'll care, the world sucks like that.

OP, keep us updated, interested in knowing the outcome

i got the receipt... i really think that the bartenders changed my bill.

what can I get done to them if thats teh case? I really would love to get them in as much trouble as possible because they were real pr*cks when i told them about leaving the tips.

If it stays for more than a week, call your CC company. "I have a receipt here that says X$. They charged me Y$" In another week, it will be done deal.

Also, whenever I pay cash tips, I always state that on the slip.

Amount: x$
Tip: CASH
Total: x$

The first thing you should do is call the manager of the bar. Tell him what they did and that while you know it is a federal offense... credit card fraud... you are willing to hear what he has to say about it before you notify the authorities and your credit card company.

Even if they do preauthorize... if you have a receipt from the bar that show the $113 as the final balance, it is not showing a preauthorization, it is showing the final balance.

Maybe they thought you were too drunk to notice.

Every time I look at mine it does the same thing. It's a pre-auth to prevent you from overdrawing or exceeding the limit on your account. Wait a couple of days and it will correct itself.

First time using a CC?

What's with all of these 'pre-authorizations'? I've been to my fair share of restaurants and have NEVER seen or noticed anything like this before.

That bar would be busted to sh!t if the manager didn't credit me, in CASH, on the spot.

It must be an automatic 30% tip. Were you in a large party?

If this isn't the case, then what were the bartenders thinking? That you weren't going to notice? Quite a gamble to take.

Bwahahahahah.

And the bar owner would sue you for damages, along with you getting charged with numerous crimes.

The automatic tip or gratuity for large party is already added on the receipt and is included on the total. Since the OP said that the total bill was for $87 I doubt this is the case

Learn how pre-authorizations work please.

Kthxbye.

The restaurant just automatically runs a preauthorization for the bill + 20%. Wait for the actual charge to post, not the pending transaction. Don't worry. The final amount takes a few days to clear.

I doubt it, because the final charge can not have cleared your bank yet; therefore, if they really did change your bill, you have no way of knowing for 2-3 business days.
