Penn State's is 1.1 MW, OSU's is licensed for 500 kW. OSU's is actually very similar to ours (Purdue), just licensed for higher power.

It's really not as scary as it sounds. Ours is in the basement of the EE building, just a small room. It's not like any of it is weapons grade or anything. There's also zero neutron flux outside of the pool (usually about 8-15 m deep), so it's not dangerous.

My alma mater's (Kansas State Univ) Nuclear Reactor puts out a whopping 1.25MW. I took a tour there for my intro chem class, and we got to walk right up to the edge and look into the water. It was actually pretty cool.

I once took a pizza delivery to the Nuclear Reactor Building. I am not going to lie, I was slightly disturbed that I was able to get in so easily. Then again, the delivery was to what looked like a 5th grade field trip. Sooooo I guess it isn't that big of a deal.

Also, having a building called the Nuclear Reactor Building was really badass. We had a building called "The Computer Building" as well. I think there was a period at PSU where they didn't really try to think of original names.

Mt freshmen year my college built a new building for physics math and comp sci, it was refereed to as the NSB (New Science Building) for my entire 4 years there, i think they actually gave it a name like 6 years after it was built, but i have no idea what it is called.

Was pretty funny looking at your class schedule and seeing its room listed as NSB 201

Yeah, did they power it up and turn off the lights so you could see the Cherenkov radiation (blue glow)? That's the best part :D

Yeah we had a few buildings like that. But the Computer Building was built in like the 50's. They just never named it or something.
