Warranty on Seagate Drives from Dell.com

I was looking at the SEAGATE 160GB Barracuda 7200.7 Internal EIDE drive (ST3160023A) on Dell.com. The warranty info was not listed anywhere, so I gave them a call. The rep told me that the drive has a 1-year warranty through Dell, but no Seagate manufacturer's warranty. I undestand that it's an OEM drive, but I thought that drive had a 5-year warranty through Seagate? The OEM Seagates on Newegg.com are listed with a 5-year warranty.

don't go thro dell if you don't like their terms.

i find lots of probs when attending a dell computer - they don't like non-dell personnel playing with their systems

I'm not replacing a drive in a Dell system, nor do I want to buy a Dell. I'm just trying to buy a hard drive! 🙂

I was just curious why Dell says the manufacturers warranty doesn't apply to the Seagate drive.

seagate sells a lot of drives to OEM's under different terms than to consumers. A lot of seagate's on newegg get only 1yr warranty through seagate, and rest through newegg. It's up to the reseller if they want to do that or not, tho

This is typical as of '03 i think

Normal/oem drives: 1yr
boxed retail normal drives: 1y, sometimes 3y
Special edition drives (like WD SE): 3y even oem (they may have stopped this)
