I am not sure if I should be happy or mad?

It’s almost 6 years old dishwasher, Maytag, came with the new house, I paid extra ~170 for 5 year extended warranty. 5 years went by, no issues. I paid another $185 for another 5 years. Couple of months into the sixth year the buttons (they are touch buttons) stopped working, repair company came it, replaced the panel and everything was fine and dandy for about 6 months, after that same problem again. Called Maytag, they send the repair company, they confirmed that it’s the same problem and have to order the parts in, 3 days later I get a call from the repair company saying that the repair was denied by the Maytag and that they will call me. I call them up immediately, and they said that the repair cost was more than the cost/worth of the appliance so they won’t be fixing it anymore, they will send me a check for 75% of the cost of the new appliance and terminate the contract.

Funny part is, Dishwasher is not totally broken, there are buttons on top of the door with which you can choose the cycle and stuff, those buttons are not responding at all. Then there are couple of buttons on the front that allow you to start and set timer, they are working just fine, using them I can run the dishwasher and it will run the “Normal” cycle, which is the only cycle we typically use.

Few ways of looking at it –
1. If I replace the dishwasher I will be paying close to $400 + $175 – $325 = $250, extended warranty included. Whereas I was expecting to pay nothing and not have to spend anything for the next 4 years, so I am not so happy…

2. Don’t do anything keep running the dishwasher in normal cycle = $352 profit (provided it keeps running for a few more years) - I am sorta happy

3. Buy the panel myself for fleabay and fix it, with $325 I think I can probably repair it twice at least.

So? Who would you feel if it was to happen to you and what should I do? Dishwasher is used moderately, 2 -3 times a week.

if you can make due, then why bother? see if you can slug it out for another year or so, then purchase a new one.

If I used something for six years and the company gave me 75% the cost to buy a NEW one, I would jump for joy. It's more than fair.

Keep the money, since you don't use the features corresponding to the non-functioning panel buttons. If you can buy a cheap replacement (with warranty) and DIY to save on labor then that would be a backup plan.

Don't forget the ~$350 I paid for warranty. So basically I was refunded that, OR I can look at it as I never paid for warranty and my dishwasher broke after 6 years...

There is another option. Keep money, use dishwasher until it completely breaks then do dishes by hand.

i'm never buying an extended warranty again. either nothing happens within the warranty period, or it's a nightmare (toshiba, panasonic). either way, money down the drain.

I'd use it till it breaks, then use that 75% that you're getting back on a new dishwasher.

dishwasher prices have gone down a lot, my mother in law bought a Samsung at bestbuy few months ago for around $500 with free installation. I paid close to $900 for a Kitchenaid 4yrs ago, a samiliar one is selling for around $600.

I would be pissed off.

That said,
I get pissed off any time an appliance does not last forever.
I only want to replace an appliance when it's an upgrade.

Example: I don't want to replace my dishwasher unless a new one will clean dishes better/faster/quieter and use less power and water .... and, it's worth the difference.

If I spent money on an extended warranty, I would expect a a replacement without having to pay out of pocket, or I would expect them to fix it no matter the cost. If they think it's too expensive to fix, they should not offer to extend the warranty.
