I don't see how some one could pay it for me when they wouldn't give me any information about it without me coming in to confirm my ID.

They want you to come in to confirm your ID so they CAN arrest you.

You guys do know that they send you notice in the mail when the issue a bench warrant right? When its something small like this, they set a bail in the same amount as your fine. You basically go in, pay your "bail" and walk out. That's IF he has a warrant.

Been there, done that, stole the county greens on my way out.

I concur with Rudeguy.

I went to court, stood in line and paid the extra "bail" to the court clerk. In and out. This was a warrant for failing to appear in court or paying my fine for a speeding ticket.

Give the court a call. If it's something minor I wouldn't stress too much about it.

If I catch you, I'm making a citizens arrest and my story will be, "Insomniator resisted, so I used deadly force!" 😛

With your love stick? :Q 😕 😉 I don't think the jury would buy that story 😉

Cheers,

duh. 😛

Warrants are easy arrests for us my man. Bring a friend so he can post your bond.

This.

This happened to me in South NJ when I was a teen. Went to court and plea bargained with the prosecutor for a bunch of speeding tickets. Didn't pay my court costs/fees on the spot and went home, and so they had a warrant out for me. I was 17, how the hell was I supposed to know I had to pay it on the spot? I was poor and thought they would just send me the bill in the mail like they did for all my other tickets. So I went back the same day and had to appear before the (prick of a) judge, who felt the need to berate me b/c I didn't know. Then he said all I would have to do is pay the fine, and slapped on 40 hours of community service so "you will remember how our system works here". 4 months later, he resigned over criminal allegations, go figure.

So just go in there, you'll have to appear before the judge if he's free that day (assuming your summons is for traffic court, otherwise call first). Depending on what you did and what court this is for, you'll probably just get hit with community service or jailtime (worst case). What did you do?

do it over phone. I had a warrant in texas for a speeding ticket for awhile, it eventually was going to transfer to my state so after a year a few phone calls were made and a check was mailed.

If you have a warrant and you show up to pay it, they will arrest you on the spot. Get someone else to go in there and pay it for you if you can. This just happened to a guy that I work with and now he's sitting in jail in Dallas.

This is not necessarily true. How each court system in each state, each county, each city and each district handles things are completely different. Keep in mind that you're comparing the Texas legal system to the NYC legal system here.

Additionally, the offense can change EVERYTHING. Something stupid like a minor traffic ticket or an open container would hardly be reason to arrest someone on the spot in many areas. These are tickets that are mostly given out to generate revenue. They want money, not the body to fill a jail cell or to give a judge something to do.

If you are THAT worried about these things, do the following previously suggested:
- Make calls until you find out how you can still pay by mail.
- Contact a lawyer and ask.
- Bring a friend in case you have to post bail.
- Come up with a better excuse as to why you missed the appearance and why you waited so long afterwords to do something about it.

You will have to turn yourself in. They will process you and release you. you will have a new charge to face...."FTA"

However the charge will likely be dropped but still a pain in the ass.

No, I live in southern NJ. Quite a pain to get there plus I was working full time at the time but now I am off.

The lady on the phone at the court house told me a warrant would go out if I did not show up, but said I could still come in and pay it. You never know with these people though, that doesn't really sound right.

sounds like they will arrest you on sight, haha.

I had a warrant put out for not paying a speeding ticket on time or something like that, I don't remember. Anyway, I went to go pay it off and they had a special line for people with warrants. Nothing happened, it just took a bit longer as they did paperwork.

What happens is there is usually a lag between processing the fta and the time it gets to send the warrant to the police department. If you can make it to the court before the warrant gets sent out to the Police department you are in the clear. If you miss this gap there is nothing you can do you must turn yoruself in.

If you can get out of a failure to appear by just paying the fine, then my uncle is an idiot for spending so much time in jail.

That's not to say I think you're screwed. My uncle really is an idiot.

Wow this explains a lot.

in all seriousness, they will just make you pay whatever it is you owe + a fine. the fine is either a standard amount (like $500) or the judge can fuck you over and make you pay alot more. just go pay it and get it over with.

Well just in case anyone is actually curious as to what would/will happen...

I went in around 11:30 on a wednesday or so last week, court was just starting so I got lucky.

3 people were there, including myself.

Hispanic man for public urination a YEAR ago, never showed up to court until now; pleaded innocent but then his lawyer explained to him what that meant and got it changed to guilty 10 minutes later. 100 dollar fine.

Slow (mentally challenged person), scared to death, kept asking the police officer that showed him to the court not to leave him. Was extremely excited when he learned he just had to pay a 25 dollar fine, whenever he wants.

And then myself, ~120 year old judge just said "open container, how do you plead", said guilty, 25 dollar fine. Got a receipt to show I payed in case I got pulled over before the warrant cleared in the system. In and out in 20 minutes!

I would have given the cop a 100 bucks when he gave me the ticket just for me not to have to drive all the way to queens.

25 bucks? thats it? Nice... Kind of makes you wonder why you didnt just go pay it in time and save yourself the stress of wondering what will happen eh?
