My wonderful, free anti-virus program, InoculateIT-PE, from Computer Associates trapped it, so no damage here, but if it hit me, it may be looking for your machine, too. It's one of those VBS (Visual Basic Scripthosting) viruses that looks in your address book and sends itself to all your friends. It also looks in your Inbox and ships itself to everyone who sends you anything. That is why I thought I should re-post this idea that I posted last time it came around AT. If you didn't pay attention, then, do so, now.

To prevent ALL VBS based viruses, including those that haven't been written yet, simply uninstall Windows Scripting Host. That is Windoze name for VBS. 95% of all Windoze users will never use it. If you ever do need it (some time in the next century), just insert your disk, and re-install it. Here's a link to how to do it for Win 95, 98, 2K and NT, including step by step screen shots.

Stay safe. Stay clean. :)

Thanks there!

I have a newbie question though, what is the Windows Scripting Host used for? Why would it be installed if 95% of the time people wouldn't use it?

Thanks!

The answer is the dreaded "D" word, DUH!

Micro$oft came up with it, thinking it would be useful. I guess it is for some people, but they have known about this vulnerability issue for a few years. You can find this info on most news sites any time a new VBS virus hits.

IMHO, their egos got in the way of creating a logical default installation that would be safer for new users. :|

Or just don't open attachments if you weren't expecting them (even if they appear to be sent by friends.)

Thats all wonderful and all that jaz, except for one problem, this virus your talking about isn't a VBS virus. Its a worm, and it doesn't use your address book, it filters your incoming and outgoing data for e-mail addresses.

Hey Harvey, I got the virus twice and both times Norton 2001 killed it before it ended up in my inbox. Ya gotta love e-mail protection. ;)

Correction: For WinME, use the instructions listed for Win2000.

I got this e-mail today. Luckily Norton Antivirus 2001 quarantined it so no damage was done. I don't have my e-mail in many places on the web, I wonder how I was selected????
